Gorf Help Please!
« on: January 16, 2013, 12:24:46 pm »
My Gorf machine worked great for about 12 years.  Then I moved it across the room, probably not gently enough, and broke something.  I did not notice it was broke until sometime later, so it may just be a coincidence with the move, and a sign of it's old age.

When I power it on here is what happens:
I hear white noise from both channels
The volume controls can raise and lower this sound
The screen light but all I see is a few things on it like: "Mission: 0", a score of zero, "Game Over", an "X" halfway down the screen, and a square block that constantly moves from the score down to where the "X" is.
I attached an image of the screen.

After reads other help on this website here are the things I have tried:
-Unseated and reseated all of the PCBs (did not clean the contacts though).
-Verified continuity across the 3 fuses I found (3 on the transformer board, and 1 more on the power board mounted on the right cabinet side).
-Checked the voltage going into the PCB case.  Here are the readings:

Unplugged: I measured the connector unplugged from the PCBs.
Loaded: I measured the contact going into the PCB case with the game on.

Line   Unplugged   Loaded
-5   -5.09      -5.07
+12   12.23      12.04
+5   5.24      5.09
+5   5.24      5.09

These look like they are close enough but correct me if I'm wrong.
This is the end of my knowledge on what to do next.

Can anyone please make some more suggestions on what to do next?  Anyway I can test the PCBs?  .. or provide anymore information?

I got it working.
I took out all of the PCBs, cleaned them with a rag and water then dried them with a hair dryer.
... did the same to the motherboard case.

Then I sprayed the PCB contacts with "QD Electronic Cleaner" and then wiped them off.  This really shined up the contacts.
I also sprayed into the slots on the motherboard case.

Dryed it again with the hair dryer, plugged it in and it worked.

First game, made it to Space Avenger!

Glad to here you got it working. I never knew they had a special electronics cleaner.
