Anyone using a widescreen as 4:3?
« on: December 29, 2012, 06:48:37 pm »
Trying to weigh up all my screen options and starting to think a 16:9/16:10 TV/Monitor could be a good choice.

But I do not like the idea of having a widescreen because i am trying to make this a retro arcade but if i was to give it a 4:3 resolution then just stretch into 4:3 aspect with control that most monitors have, then covering the black bars left at bot sides with some sort of monitor surround/plastic leaving only a 4:3 picture remaining.

What are everyones thoughts on this? I am really new so there could be something dumb that I'm overlooking. If there is, please let me know.

I'm using a 16:9 monitor and got a bunch of digital bezels for MAME games here: http://www.cooleywire.com/jimmyh/mame/artwork.html. Just replace the artwork zip files with the ones on this website. If you Google 16:9 MAME artwork and a specific game name, you can often find many others people have made. There are a bunch on the HyperSpin forums as well.

For games that don't already have 16:9 bezels, I created a horizontal and vertical ones matching the theme of my cab.

I'm pretty happy with my setup. The main thing driving this for me was cost as I couldn't find anything larger than a 19" 4:3 for the amount of money I was willing to spend. I needed to go with a flat screen given the slim design of my cab.
