Filter Genre in Mamewah?
« on: October 31, 2003, 07:56:12 pm »
Ok, I've been reading previous posts and other documentation on mamewah, but I still can't figure out how to do this, or if it is even possible.

I want to create a custom list for each genre.  How can I do this?

I have the catver.ini file.

Thanks

Ryan

I just figured out how last night, if this doesn't work for your, our paths must be a little different or something.

1. Start Mamewah
2. Open Options Dialog
3. Select "Game List Options"
4. Select "Select Custom List"
5. Pick an empty list (eg. Custom List 5)
     - this will change your current list to Custom List 5 which should be empty
6. Back up one screen back to the "Game List Options" dialog.
7. Select "Generate Custom List using Filters"
8. Select "Category Filters"
9. Select "Yes" on the ones you want, and "No" on the ones you dont.

When you exit all the way back out, it should generate your new list...

Now you can go back into the menu and change the name from "Custom List X" to what you want... (e.g. Shooters).

Hope this helps....

(btw, I am running Mamwah v0.962)

Ok, this sucks.  The categories really dont narrow things down.  batman = sports??

is there any practical way to do this alphabetically?  has anyone had luck with categories?

does anyone here with a full romset use mamewah?  what do you do?

thanks

I narrowed the list to 130 of my favorites and switch between the full list and my favorites. I haven't tried to do what your doing but I'd like to.

Heres how to get around in your lists faster, its from the mamewah readme-
P1 Up / Down       (kb Up / Down)      - move up/down 1 game
P1 Button 3      (kb SPACE)      - move up 1 game
P1 NeoGeo D      (kb 'x')      - move down 1 game
P1 Left / Right      (kb Left / Right)   - move up/down 26 games (1 screen)
P2 Up / Down      (kb 'r' / 'f')      - move up/down 100 games
P2 Left / Right      (kb 'd' / 'g')      - move up/down 500 games
My statements are my own opinions. They have the value that the reader gives them. My opinion of my opinion varies between foolish and brilliant and these opinions often change with new information.

yeah this really sucks.  mamewah's category filter is no filter at all.  it includes tons of games that aren't in each category.

i wish there was a simple solution that allowed easy launching with joysticks, and sorts as well as mame32 does.

are there any good solutions?

it sounds like you got a bad catver from somewhere.  mamwah doesn't make the categories, it uses the catver.ini file in your mame root directory.

if you are getting bad categories, you have a bad caver.ini...

use this one...

With over 4000 games ina full set, it does get unweildy without mutliple lists.
You can make list by categories, type of inputs/controls,etc... Works pretty well for me.
You can always edit the automatically generated list files if you don't like them...

I've been struggling with this and can't find any option to sort the games by categorys like into sports, and puzzles, and shooters, ect....

yeah we had the same exact problem.  i belive all we had to do to fix it was refresh the main games list.  then when you go back into the custom list options, the last filter listed will be category.  keep us posted, we're trying to get this working too.

we are using the catver.ini from catver.com

maybe we did something wrong.  it seems like there are many games that are listed in every category.  it seems to me that if mame32 can successfully categorize games in its gui, this problem isn't necessary.

Do you have the correct version of catver (ie same version as your MAME)?  I had a report not so long ago that if an old version is used, games missing from the list may be categorised incorrectly...something to check at least.

Also, I'd recommend the catver from www.mameworld.net\catlist - it's generally more accurate.  It is only at v0.74 atm tho.

I have mame .76 with a full 76 romset.  I'm using the 76 version of catver from catver.com.

Hey, thanks for the reply.  I'll try the older version of the catver.  Maybe something will work out.  We've tried several other front ends (including 3 horrid days with myhtpc) and we're really set on getting mamewah to work.

Wow this is great.  I cant believe I did not know about this.  I tried the CatVer from mameworld and it seems to work as expected.  Now if only they had a player filter....  Looks like all my work for making a custom 3 and 4 player game list was not a waste after all....at least until I upgrade my romset from .66.

ok, tried the older catver.  i still have things like baseball, and golf games showing up in something like driving.

at this point im thinking maybe i have a romset with a lot more roms than what 76 supports.

for example, i have batman forever, which shows up in driving, but the game itself doesn't work.  maybe that's why the catver doesn't categorize it.

do you think a program that organizes your roms would help me out?  is there something that will seperate just the roms that are actually supported so i dont have games showing up in the wrong categories?

Sweet it works, ya know I think someone mentioned that you needed to refresh the list. We should compile questions like these and submit them to minwah to add to his faq. I refreshed the main list and wah lah game categorys were added and were able to filter on.

I didn't review it to make sure every game fits the categorys its supposed to but a quick once over looked good. I'll have to poke at it somemore. I got my catver.ini from catver.com.

I think this front end has everything I want except joystick support. I might have to install joy to key so that I can use this on all my cabs.

what romset do you have?  when i filter categories, it narrows things down, but the results are disapointing.

If your MAME & CatVer versions match up, then I would suggest you try ClrMAMEPro or RomCentre to check your romsets.  It will get rid of any un-needed roms/sets and tell you which ones are out of date/wrong etc.

If you could give me some more examples of games with bad categories, I will try to check them.  I only have v0.74 tho, so try to find a few that weren't just added in the last few versions.

i dont have it in front of me right now, but some titles that i recall are "4-in-one" or something like that and i do remember "batman forever".  i didn't realize batman forever was an arcade game.  it said it was japanese.  also that rom didn't even work.  yeah i'll use one of those programs and see what i can do.

ok, fixed the categories.

i must have more roms that mame officially supports.  these roms are listed in the 76 catver.ini file from catver.com, but they dont have a category listed next them.

thus they show up in any category.

i fixed this by changing the blank space in the catver file to something like "notcategorized" or something along those lines.

i then made a seperate category just for those troublemaking roms, incase i ever want to access them.

now categories work great.  mamewah rocks.

one more question, though.  I am using mamewah for snes as well.  not all of the games are zipped, though.  is there a way to include more than one extension (zip, smc, sfc) in mamewah's options? or do i need to somehow zip each (~300) file?

Thank for the help,

Ryan

talkingoctopus, you made a list of 3 and 4 player games?

that was of my next tasks.  any chance you could put yours online?  it would be great to have a starting point.

Glad you got it working.  I don't know why it just classifies those 'non-classified' games as a random category - I'll have to look at that.

For SNES, you could try setting the ROM Extension as '*', but if the emulator you are using requires 'Send ROM Extension' to be yes, then it may not work.

Personally, I would zip the roms - try searching for a batch zipping program to do them all in one go...

Argh... I would love to put it online but it is only on my cab and I really have no way to get the info from it easily.  Sorry!!!  I wish the catver would include players!

octo-do you know of any lists online of 3 and 4 player titles?  i'd rather have a list as a starting point instead of playing them all.

Yeah use this tool called sortinfo:  It sorts based on player.
