KT-2914DF: Stuck in cabinet and needs new top brace
« on: December 14, 2012, 10:46:48 pm »
Hi all,

I bought my first cabinet at auction recently and am now in the process of taking it apart so I can fully clean and refinish it. At some point the previous owner replaced the original 25" monitor with a 27" monitor (KT-2914DF). It seems they jury rigged it in there because the top brace is completely missing and nothing is bolted in. Despite this, the monitor is completely stuck. I suspect they glued the bottom brace to the wood, but uncertain how I can know for sure.

How would you go about loosening the monitor? Pulling on it makes the entire cabinet move with it. It sounds like wood cracking if somebody holds the cabinet while pulling the monitor. I would prefer to avoid breaking the wood, but it would not be the end of the world. Assuming it's glued down, I imagine it might give way if I try twisting the monitor a bit rather than pulling perpendicular to the seal.

Once I get it loose, the next problem is the top brace is missing. The two rear braces are only connected at the bottom, so there is nothing to get a grip on while pulling it out. I was planning to find some sort of strong rope or wire and looping it through the top corners to make a handle. Does that sound reasonable? Any recommendation on materials?

The third problem is again related to the missing top brace. I'm having a hard time finding a suitable replacement. I'm not sure if "brace" is even the right word to look for. Where can I buy a replacement?

Thank you so much for reading this and any advice you can add!

Here are a bunch of pictures that can hopefully illustrate the situation better.

get some blocks of wood and lay the cab on its back so the monitor is flat get some ropes threw the four corner mounts making a loop from the two on same side then you and a buddy gently start lifting evenly it should come free
that's how i got a few stuck monitors out in the past
good luck
