Dreamcast light guns not very accurate?
« on: December 01, 2012, 07:51:10 pm »
I just got 2 starfire lightguns off amazon and they aren't very accurate.  Is that just all dreamcast guns, or did I get a bad batch.

My 2 guncons fire perfectly.  Does the Dreamcast use a different technology for the light guns that make them worse?  When I play House of the dead 2 the calibration on them seems way off, but when I play its not that bad since Hotd doesn't really need precision aiming like Time Crisis sometimes needs.

Or are the Starfire Lightguns just bad in general.  I don't like the trigger on them very much, and they are way too big.

Its probably my guns.  I've done more research and have read nothing good about the Interact Starfire guns.  The mad catz ones people swear by, and apparently the official dreamcast one was never released in US?

Last time I base a purchase on how cool something looks with a 3 out of 5 stars on Amazon.

Mad catz it is.  Thanks, just a outside source is all I needed.

I got my mad catz guns and they do feel a lot better than the starfire ones.  They still don't calibrate right on Hotd2.  The odd thing is though if I put the gun right against the glass and calibrate then its close to perfect, even if I stand back a few feet.

But when I do it from a few feet away I'd be lucky to even hit the calibration targets.  Either the TV is too old, but that's just how you calibrate Hotd2...  :dunno

u need to run hotd2 in 60hz mode thats for sure, it sucks in pal 50hz mode trust me (it runs slower, not as smooth), plus that could be causing the problems with your lightguns

i dont remember if hotd2 allows you to change to 60hz mode in the menus etc. try looking around the settings menus etc

otherwise, if i remember correctly, you can use a dreamcast boot disk such as the utopia boot disk or DC-x boot disk to get your pal games running in ntsc (maybe check in some dreamcast forums first as im a bit out of touch with the whole scene)

EDIT: have a read of this: http://www.dreamcast-scene.com/guides/how-to-play-dreamcast-games-from-another-region/

I'm not using a PAL, or burned copy of the game.  Its a legit US copy.  I read that playing burned stuff can wear out the dreamcast laser faster and there's slowdown.  So I broke open the wallet for 2 bucks on amazon lol.

You'll get tired of the Dreamcast and put it in a closet way faster than you can burn out the laser playing games.  Maybe if you used it as a CD player, and you're the type that has the CD player running 10 hours a day, it could happen.  Otherwise play the discs you want and be happy.

apparently the official dreamcast (gun) was never released in US?

No, for some dumb reason related to the school shootings or something, Sega decided not to release guns here in the US for the Dreamcast. Even if you did import the guns from Japan, they don't work on the US games (except Virtua Cop on the Smash Pack for some reason). So what I did was, I chipped my DC so I can play legal Japanese copies and imported all of the gun games, and 2 Sega guns.
