Mame v.76 rom set... is it worth updating?
« on: October 29, 2003, 09:22:52 am »
Ok... I may be living in the stone age, but I kept updating my rom set up until v.62.

Is it worthwhile having a complete new rom set burnt to update to v.76?

Have any of the chd files changed or been added?

I am a little undecided and would find invaluable your opinions.

Cheers guys!

-Alex

There were a ton of CHD games added in .75, the BeatMania games.

If you're happy with the games you're playing now, don't upgrage.

However, with .77, a lot of the Tekken games are making their way into working status.  No sound yet, though.

I'm thinking .77 is going to be the next must have rom set.
I'm working from .64 myself.

From all the WIP postings it looks like we'll be getting the Tekken's, Soul Edge, and ST-V games.
My brother really liked die hard in the arcade, so he's pretty pumped that it might be coming.

The .7x series has seen a bunch of updates to older games.  Gauntlet got a new romset.

Speed Differences ? .73 or .76
« Reply #4 on: October 29, 2003, 07:55:15 pm »
I've finally completed a nice collection of what I like to call , my favs, or "quarter hogs" that took my allowance when I was younger. I'm not so much into looking for updated roms as I am for playing the ones I like at the best speed possible.

Has anyone noticed a big difference in speed between 73 and 76? Do the lot of you usually upgrade to the newest version when one is released? And, if running the Windows Command Line ver. , I realize there is a MAME ver. that's optimized for the i686, but does that really make a difference in speed compared to the standard version? I'm running a P4-2.53 mhz, with 1gb ddr 2700.

Also, does anyone have a problem with Asteroids Deluxe running slow? If I turn off the artwork, it runs fine. Any advice one can give or perhaps a fix to this?

Thanks,

Michael

Asteroids Deluxe has been getting slower and slower since MAME 036.  The big hit was when they implemented the new artwork engine (ver 063?).  Then it took another hit when they started refining the (discreet) sound emulation.

If it has slowed down yet again, I am hoping it is because they have implemented some vector enhancements such as trails and glowing bullets.  Anybody know for sure?
