Monitor emitting high pitched whine, no signal
« on: November 11, 2012, 05:31:53 pm »
Morning all,

I have a custom cabinet I built around 10 years ago thanks to the help of this forum (has it really been that long?) and I used a SONY Trinitron PVM1910 monitor mounted in a home built cab.

It's been a fantastic monitor and rock solid for probably the better part of 20 years, but the other day when I turned on the power to the arcade at the wall, the monitor immediately started emitting a high pitched whine and no longer shows any signal.

The whine is constant until the monitor is again switched off at the power.

I'd prefer to repair it rather than replace it, as the cabinet was designed around this monitor and would require some significant rebuilding to accommodate a different monitor. I will most likely take it to a TV repairman here in Adelaide, Australia if such people still exist nowadays.

I'd like to get an idea about what the problem could be first however. Any idea about what this issue could be and how it could be fixed?

Thanks,

grantspain

possibly electrolitic cap failure or bad solder joints

Cheers. I might see if I can find a TV repairman that will work with monitors here in Adelaide, Australia. (If I can find such people anymore!).

I don't think I'm comfortable with opening up a CRT, what with the residual charge and all.

Having a bit of knowledge first of what might be going in is a great help. Much appreciated.

i had a screen like this as well, curiously enough, when i made the screen brighter the whine was less apparent
