I haven't been feeling well for the past few months and about all I manage to do in my free time is occasionally post here and play video games.
I just wanted to post my thoughts on re6 because it seems to be getting quite a bit of bad press which is completely unwarranted. Capcom is trying something a little different with this one, which is always a good thing with a long running franchise like this one. I think the people giving it bad reviews either want a resurrrection of the old re 1-3 games (why? dear god why?) or want it to somehow be a clone of re4. It isn't either, but that's a good thing... it takes just a little from each sequel to make a new experience.
Full disclosure before we go any further. I haven't finished the game yet because I'm taking my time. I've beaten Leon's campain, I'm currently in Chris's and I haven't even messed with Jake's yet.
The games's story-telling is top notch, at least as far as re games go. Not since part 4 have there been plot points and characters that I've actually cared about in a re game. You won't find many big shockers, but it's entertaining and serves as a goal to keep going. Thus far Leon's seems to be the best, with the new character Helena making an interesting conversation partner. Chris's partner, admittedly could be replaced with a box of rocks and still be a more compelling character.... luckily Chris is a strong enough character to hold that path together all on his own.
The new combat system is where the game really shines. For the most part it's standard resident evil... left trigger aims, right trigger fires, but now you have a lot more options in terms of movement and attacks. In previous games, when you run out of ammo you are screwed. Sure you usually have a whimpy knife or some other melee attack, but it's not strong enough to kill an enemy. Now you have a full melee system. It isn't complex in terms of buttons... you always use the right trigger, but it is in terms of what you can do. Get close to an enemy and you can kick or otherwise knock them off guard. At this point they either fall to the ground or stagger. If they stagger, an additional attack will perform some sort of wrestling-style attack on them, smashing their heads in. If they fall to the ground you can use right trigger to stomp on their head. There are other attacks as well. Sneaking up on an enemy allows a one-hit take-out, similar to Assasins Creed. You can also knock enemeis off railings, grab their legs to trip them, ect.
The melee system is so improved that you can actually clear most areas without ever having to pull out your gun. This has it's advantages as well as gun fire attracts zombies and you'll need to save your ammo for tougher enemies.
You can also run by holding down the a button and slide by pressing left trigger while running. Neither are necessary, but they are great options for running away from tougher enemies. Also I've found the infamous cover system, that people claim is a rip-off of gow (it's not) is completely unnecessary. If you want to duck for cover great, but you don't need to, so no you are not playing a gow clone in certain chapters.
The AI in the game is pretty great. Your partner is useful and will help you out as well as take care of themselves. They actually kill enemies instead of weakly holding them off for you to take them out, like in previous installments. Except for certain scripted events they are essentailly immortal as well, so you don't have to worry about babysitting them. There are even segments when you'll have multiple AI buddies and they all still do a great job..... you'll actually be thankful they are with you.
You don't die instantly from loss of health either. If a enemy lunges at you while your health is at 0, you'll fall to the ground. While on the ground you can roll and crawl a little to avoid enemies as well as fire your gun while on your back. If you survive long enough or if your partner comes to revive you you'll be back on your feet with 1 block of health. It adds an element of tension and you'll be suprised how often you can sneak your way out of a tough situation this way.
Gone is the old storage system. Guns don't take up storage slots anymore, only items. Actually even that isn't true. Multiple items of the same kind only take up a single slot with the exception of herbs. There are enough slots to carry each kind of ammo with a few slots to spare, so basically it only limits the amount of herbs you can carry. Fortunately you can mix and process herbs on the fly and them put them in a pill bottle which doesn't take up any slots. You can take a "herb pill" by pressing the r button as well, so it isn't a pain in the butt to heal yourself now.
The enemies are varied and interesting. You have three major classes.... zombies (and their mutations), parasites (las plagas), and monsters(b.o.w.s). Each path focuses on one type. This is where the game gets all the bad press and I honestly don't get it. The campains are fairly long and by the time you finish one, the novelty of that type of monster is just about to wear thin. I for one was glad to have a totally different style of enemy after Leon's campain of primarily zombies. Chris's campaign is mostly las-plagas enemies, which are the smart fast ones. But they have guns this time! And they mutate into much more interesting forms. I won't spoil it, but about halfway through chapter 1 you'll stumble upon a mutation that will throw you for a loop! There is some cross-over as well, so in each chapter you'll face all three types eventually. People complain about the cross-overs with other characters as well. I honestly don't see how because they consist of a boss fight at most or a 2 minute cut-scene at least.
The game does have issues though. Most noteably the pause feature, or lack there of. Yeah that's right you can't pause the game! How lame is that? Technically you can, but the game only lets you when there aren't any enemies and you are in a "safe" location. Since there isn't any danger in these instances, you don't need to pause anyway, so it's essentially useless. Also the game doesn't have any tutorial nor are you given any hint as to how to do some things. I suggest you download the manual from capcom's site... it helps.
Anyway, I think the game is really good and at the least it's worth a try to see if you like it. I would personally say it's as good as re4 overall, which is an improvement from the general blandness that is re5.
