I started my 1-up inspired cab this week. not much to see but by the end it will be a nice sequence of photos. here's one for size comparison (its a bit on the big side)

How did you do the artwork on the cab next to it? That looks incredible, I wish my cabs could like even a fraction that good.

Thx guys--the artwork on the machine next to it is just a collage of arcade guys glued to a black and blue painted cab--I'm not real happy with this side of the cab because I think the characters are too small--I haven't got around to getting some tips from the artwork forum since its only temporary.

Do oyu think the front of the new cab is too pointy? Looked different on paper $:-\$

I find the shape to be top heavy or too long in the monitor part. Now I've been designing my cab for 5 months and I still haven't arrived at a profile the I find acceptable. I'm just too picky.

I looks like you had to move the monitor up to make room for the rotating control panels and thus make the top part larger (higher). It may be to late for this but I would explore moving the control panel down. If I recall correctly, 1-UP's control panel is lower than normal.

A few months ago I was pursuing a rotating panel design but I dropped it because I needed more than 3 panels and I couldn't get the profile that worked for me.

J/K - It looks great. I'm with zero-one, stuck a bit on analysis, but I just started. I suppose I should make an official announcement and all since I have a site up. Maybe later this week. Keep us update on how it goes. I'm with you, rotating panels are the way to go I think.

Menace, it looks good!

I am just starting to get my BASEMENT (Look at the ductwork and I-Beam in the upper left corner of the picture. ) finished, I know how much work is involved. I have built to cabs and a slot car track before finishing my basement, so don't let these guys give you a hard time about it.

Funny story when that picture was taken--I was remarking to my fiancee that I thought maybe I had made it too big and without thinking she replies "well on your next one you can make some improvements" i spun quickly to make sure my ears hadn't deceived me and her eyes were as wide as saucers when she realized she had all but given me permission to build MAME3--I had a good laugh at her reaction

when i get the back on i'll take some more pics--this is too much fun!

Ah ha! fiancee is the key word here. Once you're married and with children she will be less open to your projects. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Concerning the size... That thing is HUGE; good thing you're a tall man. I'd feel like a kid playing on that cab.

Maybe you'll start a new trend, 130% size cabs. They may be as popular as the 70% size cabs. I'm just teasing BTW and I hope you don't mind.

Painted, coin door panel installed, speakers installed, 1 panel of 3 installed (and still rotating

sadly it peaks at 7 ft

actually 6'9" inches or so--just fits under all the ducts in the basement--With the rotating panels and a 25" monitor I found it tricky to get it all in there even at that size. Ah well, I'm loving the new beast anyways!

Update: Monitor installed (but not working

) pedal platforms installed, accessory drawer moving, control panel 1 drilled and installed, plexiglass cut and installed (as well as the last 1/8" of my left thumb $:-\$ ) I figure I'm 3/4 done..

Those pedals were one of the reasons its taller than normal--needed 1ft of clearance for open and close. The next cab will be smaller...

Looks great stu!!!! When can I come over to try it out??? I promise that I'll only stay and play for about 4 or 5 hours..... lol lol. I hope to kept a good record on this project... I would like to build one like that with your plans. When I come look at it when you are finished we can discuss what you to improve on your (or mine) next project

. I very interested in drawning up the plans on my cad system and making my own suggestions for improvements. I not saying that your design sucks but we always can build better machine with more toys on it!!!

. Keep me in the loop menace... as you know I be building at least 2 more in the spring.

Yeah, it can't rotate down because of the drawer and there are wedges in the door so that when it is closed it can spin up (against the wedges) when you open the door 6" or so--its spinning time.

Yeah, I've already thought of some new ideas that would make it alot smaller and still fully rotate with a 25" monitor and pedals.--I'll pass them on--but you'll owe me big time

I already do !!! Once my Brother sees your new mame machine this weekend I know he will be bugging the sh*t out of me to build one for him. But what I might do is consult with you on the new and improved mame III project build it and give my mame I to him... sound good???

In the spirit of updating and at the request of tweeter--here are my most recent addtions. What you can't see is that the monitor is now working and the Mk64 encoder is installed and programmed. Here is the control panel with custom nannu graphics on the buttons (hard to see).. The joysticks are wico rotaries with custom made handles based on the SNK design and painted cherry red (gm's color name) I think they need new springs but I'll have to get to that later. the two back buttons are pause and escape--essential for beer runs and parties! I will change this picture when the new artwork shows up tonight.

I installed leaf switches on the coin regect buttons for coin 1 and coin 2. I'm getting pretty juiced about getting this thing going--its february already

3 control panles

Panel #1

2x 8 way rotaries with six buttons and 1 4 way wico

Panel #2

tron stick with spinner, 2 1/4" trackball and two buttons

Panel #3

blank to accomodate, 2x 360 wheels or 1 star wars yoke (to be completed)

Its ambitious I admit--but I hate not having the controls for the games I want to play! I'm still on the lookout for a dedicated spy hunter yoke as well

I'm designing a cab with a big drawer too. In my case it's gonna hold replaceble control panels though (I want to many different panels and I fear/know I'm not handy enough for rotating panels). I was just wondering how you keep the lower area of the cab sturdy enough. It's my first cab so I can't really imagine how strong the side panels will be and how much bracing it all needs to stay together. Thing is, I was afraid that taking out the front plate would weaken the structure, but in your case there is seems to be even less to hold things together (with the rotating control panel being in the way for any other bracing). Is there some hidden beam holding things together? Or is the monitor shelf to enough keep the sides from the sides bending too much?

the rotating panel has lazy susan bearings on each end--if you simplified its structure it would be a simple beam that rotates--this would prevent bending as it is uncompressable. The monitor frame is a very tight fit and is continuously braced down the side so basically, from the bottom of the marquee to the top of the control panel it could be considered a solid mass. that said, you have basically a 1.5" unsupported gap between the lazy susan bearings and the shelf at the bottom where the drawer bottom glides--no problems with 5/8" MDF.

When I'm done, I am going to brace the entire frame at the back (in addition to the back door), to prevent any wobblies but I didn't want the members there while I'm still crawling around inside.

forgive me if this is a dumb question, but what are the leaf switches for on the back of the reject buttons? freeplay?

No such thing as a dumb question! They are there so people can just press the coin reject slot and they get a credit--hides the coin button more discreetly this way.

Also, will that thing fit through or out of your doorway?
One winter a friend and I built a quarter pipe in his basement (for BMX bikes). Come springtime we go to move it outside ad it will not fit throught his garage door!@ We had to take it apart and reassemble outside.

yeah my and my buddy did a dry carry when the frame was complete but nothing else had been added--i will be taking some doors off the hinges, but since i'd be moving out of the house anyways, I figure thats ok
