Flash page idea so far...
« on: October 20, 2003, 12:02:24 am »
Whatsup all,
    Well I've been thiknin bout a few innovative ideas for a while for a new flash page for my site, and here's one I've come up with.  I still have a few kinks to work out, and the damn boundaries moonwalk problem is pretty bad.  It doesnt always happen, but usually it'll send the speed = -7 command while your getting out of the boundary, and you cant have it set speed = 0 or else you'll get stuck.  I'm still messing around with the values and some if statements to see if I can get this thing working without the moonwalk glitch.  If anyone has any input or ideas or anything like that, I'm very open to criticism.  This is no where near completion, but it'll be awesome when its' done.

I would say that its neat that you can get something like that working and all, but fancy flash stuff gets old quick and most people will just get irritated after the niftyness wears off. Just look around at the sites you visit the most, do any of them have complex flash interfaces?

However, if you were intending on using this interface for a game, then I think it would be effective.

Oh well, neat interface, just too much work to navigate a website imo.

Yeah very true, I would definitely have the links underneath the flash movie so it wouldnt be the only way to select the site you wish to go to.  I know people like just using their plain old mouse for navigation, but nothing wrong with trying something new.  Someday I'll figure out how to make a game out of this, but until that day I'll just keep messin around.

Nice idea - I usually hate Flash but this is not the place to rant about that.

A few things:

1. Please give people the option to turn sound on/off. Some of us are at work  ;D
2. Make sure you give people the option of viewing a plain html site or the flash site. I know several people who have completely unistalled the Flash player.
3. Find a nicer font.
4. Have the little fella stop bouncing up and down like he needs to take a whiz unless he's moving.
5. Maybe change the brightness of the buildings slightly when the link becomes active?

Just some ideas. Keep us posted on how it evolves.

1.  yah thats no problem, I'll add that in now so more people dont have to have the same problem at work.
2.  Yep, all html site of course has to be included.
3.  Well my real hopes actually are to have fading text so when you are over a certain area, that area's text pops up with a little description either in the corner or next to the character.  I also want to find a gif of that arrow thats used in Final Fantasy Tactics for psx, so it could be used to show landmarks of different places.  I dont know if this is gonna go anywhere, but its just a cool idea that I'm tryin to get to work.
4.  LoL, yah he does look a little spastic moving like that.  I also want to make a button that swaps what character you have moving around, so I can mix it up with like Chrono Trigger characters, Final Fantasy characters, the works.
5.  I might mess around with the map some more, its just a sprite rip off of Chrono Trigger, but I think if all of the major buildings and such are like glowing the darker background should look good.  What would be really cool is if I knew how to use those 3D flash programs, so I could make him onlike 3D platforms and big ol 3D castles and such.
      -Thanks for the comments

instead of making him walk, why not have the guest click on an area and the character will follow a motion line to that area and launch it?

When i was testing it, sometimes the up arrow would send him down, left was rights, etc... it's a neat concept, but would prob. get old pretty fast if it's just for navigation... just my $.o2

Psst.. we just launched our new Flash homepage with "disney Motion" technology. DL the app and check it out!

Yah the thing that was moving him backwards is the boundary detection errors, I need to learn the command for setting the movie clip backwards by a desired pixel number, cause the commands I know are like this
_y+= speed;  //sets y velocity to speed//
_y= 153;        //sets movie clip to 153//
_y= location -7;  <---  I want to learn something like this, but I dont know of how I could do it, cause if you have a variable location set to a constant, all its gonna do is set the character back to where they were.
  Right now my boundaries are set as  (pseudocode warning):
if (landtest=true) <--- not exact, but close
     speed=7;
else
     speed= -7;
  I have a bunch of other variables setup, but it still messed up.

What about this. Set up some variables called top_border, bottom_border, left_border, right_border, char_location and movement. Then do something like:

on (keyPress "<Left>")
     if (char_location - movement > left_border) {
          char_location -= movement
     }  else  {
          char_location = left_border
     }
}

Then the same for the other three directions.

So it checks to see if the normal movemenr would still be within the boundary. If it is, it will do the normal movement, otherwise it stops at the edge.

Hope that makes sense. If it doesn't or you need some more help you can PM me.
