Mamewah Slow in Switching Emulators...
« on: October 18, 2003, 01:38:10 pm »
Greets All,
Got a quick question for all thoes in the "know" pertaining to MameWah.  Originally it was switching just fine in between various emulators (mame,PC apps, snes, nes, etc).  Now for some reason it takes a fairly long time to switch..up wards near 10 seconds or so.  I tried upgrading the latest version with the same problem occuring.  Also tried disabling the scren shots/sounds/etc still have same problem...any ideas?

thanx

mine does the same actually.. not 10 seconds, but sometimes a good 5-6. I *think* its because it has to load the rom lists up? Saying that after i switch to each emulator, it doesnt seem to take as long to switch back.

I suspect you are both running Win98??

In v0.95, I had re-written much of the code to make MW more memory efficient.  I made it so that it only hold the currently selected list in memory...unfortunately it seems that in Win98 it has a hard time clearing large lists.  I suspect the long delay you are seeing is when switching from MAME's main list to something smaller.

There's not a lot I can do about this atm...I'd recommend using filtered lists and using the 'Select Custom Lists to Cycle' option - basically try to cut down using large lists  :-\

Yes, I'm running Win98Se...(a necessity if you want to play Golden Tee)  I'll see if I can find an older version (pre-v0.95)...otherwise I'll look into those custom or filtered lists.  I'd really hate to have to upgrade the O/S...unless any of you folks know of a "Golden Tee" type quality game to run on win2k+.

as always thanks,

What version of golden tee does not work in XP? I have version 1.0600 running on XP with no problem.

Surprises me a little, in my tests I always found the list to change in <1 second.  Do you have any emulators with >~4000 games in the list?

Actually my main list is running right around 4k.  But the only thign that has changed is the versions of mamewah...previous versions swapped nearly instantaneously...I installed mamewah (latest version) on my desktop and x-ferred all the roms/emus..and it swaps perfectly...go fig (that's runnign win2k)..cab's running win98se

Well up to v0.90, I held ALL lists in memory at once.  This was OK, since there was only main/favorites lists...but now you can have up to 420 lists (20 emulators, 21 lists each), keeping them all in memory is not good.  Also, lists are used for artwork (screensaver) and MP3's.

The delay is caused when clearing the list, which is not a problem for 2k/XP.  Again, my advice is try to use smaller lists, and remove the main list from being cycled to using the 'Select Custom Lists to Cycle' option.

well my mame one is about 3500 games at the moment.

My snes one, is only at 300.

But maybe it is just because it goes straight into mamewah after booting, maybe it is still loading stuff up causing mamewah to slow down a bit.

And also, any idea how to not show it booting into the desktop before actually running the program (i have mamewah in start menu, but i still see the desktop for about 3 seconds).

Sounds like you want to run MameWAH as your shell.  Edit your system.ini file, replace the line:

shell=explorere.exe

to

shell=x:\mamewah\mamewah.exe (or however your path structure is set)
