Almost ready to start a project... need help
« on: October 11, 2003, 06:35:26 pm »
Hello all,

I'm getting ready to start work on my project in the next couple of weeks and I need help with deciding on a TV/Monitor.

Here's the "problem".  I've recently purchased an old Taito - Arkanoid cabinet that's only 23" wide.

This is making the selection of a TV or monitor very difficult.  I'd like to fit the largest size image in this box possible and I'm open to any suggestions.

I'm even willing to remove the monitor or TV from its case if necessary.

Thanks in advance for any advice you may have,

Matt

I would go with a 19" monitor.  Technically it may be possible to stuff a larger one in there, but a 19" will look very well-proportioned to the rest of the cab.  I have 2 horizontal cabs that are 23" wide and I have 19" monitors in both.  I certainly wouldn't go any larger than a 19" on mine.

With classic-style cabs like an Arkanoid, the control panel puts you very close to the monitor.  Like on my Williams cab, sometimes the 19" seems almost too big because you stand so close to it.  At least with an Arkanoid, the monitor lays back at about a 45deg angle so it doesn't look like you are standing right on top of it.

Technically there is no such thing as an Arkanoid cabinet, since Arkanoid was a conversion-only game.

If it is in a Taito classic cabinet, then I also say nothing larger than 19"
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

I agree with the previous comments that a 19" is going to be the best course of action for you to pursue monitor-wise.

True.  I jumped to the conclusion that it was in the Taito cab.  I've almost bought an Arkanoid 4 times now, and every one was in the Taito cab so that's what I think of when someone mentions Arkanoid.  I suppose someone could have converted an original MKII, and in that case maybe a larger monitor would be more appropriate.  ;)

Thanks guys!

It looks like I'm going to track down a computer monitor.  I may try to see if I can find a good 21" instead of 19".

Using a computer monitor will allow me to use the machine to play some PC games as well.

It was an Arkanoid in a Taito cabinet.  It seems in good shape.  I haven't decided yet what I want to do with my control panel.  I may go for the big 'ole multi button and stick config or swapable panels.

The one thing making me lean towards the big panel is that this has to be easy for my fiancee and friends to use.

I do have an extra spinner now, since I already have a DOT spinner from Oscar.    I may wire up the Arkanoid also for the authenticity factor.

Thanks again guys!
