Control Panel Artwork - analog controls (Tempest inspired)
« on: October 08, 2012, 06:02:49 pm »
Here's another one I've been working on, which needs some work but I'm basically happy with it.

Thanks to t3design for giving me a scan of the original Tempest artwork, which I pinched the starfield/gas cloud (or whatever it is) parts from.

Discuss...

Probably obvious but this panel has (from left to right) analog stick (Ultrastik), 3 buttons, 3" trackball & spinner (with repro Tempest knob).

This is my least 'authentic' panel in that it has more controls than any one game would have used...but it's worth it to save making another panel!

I tried it with different colours which doesn't look quite as in-yer-face. Not sure which I prefer?...

I like the first one. The red makes it pop for me.

Thanks! I still can't quite decide which I prefer...I think maybe the blue one looks too much like camouflage, but I'm not completely sure about the red either...

Found three different color variations:

The first one with red has blue rays instead of purple.

The second one has purple gas clouds instead of red.

The third has more blue in the gas clouds.

Your first version has purple rays instead of blue.  This color difference could contribute to the "in your face" factor.

Your second version doesn't have purple in the gas clouds.  This could contribute to the "camo" factor.

Thanks Scott, I had seen the first two before but not the last one. I will try something similar to that one!

Once again great work! Now would you mind showing how the panel swapping actually works?

Thanks! What exactly do you want to see? I don't have any pics but I can take some.

This particular panel has a cable with a Molex connector on to connect the buttons to the IPAC inside the cabinet. Plus one USB lead from a hub on the panel which has the Ultrastik and 2x mouse boards plugged in. Actually the Molex lead could be got rid of if I wired the buttons to the Ultrastik...but I didn't have the Ultrastik when I first wired it up...

In terms of physically swapping there are two clamps (one each side). To access I have to take the front door off and open the coin door in order to reach inside and release/clamp.
