advmenu basic config help

I'm working on setting up advmenu with command line mame in winxp, and have a couple of problems. I can start up games fine though.

1) When I try to set mame as my emulator by typing
emulator "mame" mame "mame\mame.exe"
it always give me an error like unknown option 'mame'. I've tried several inane variations so I hope it's something I'm screwing up.

2) When I try to set the marquee directory so I can select games from their marquees (the whole point of using advmenu for me) it gives me a similar error.

Update: nevermind the instructions included weren't right  >:( I figured it out.
