Dremel plunge Router bit for T-Molding

Hey guys

I have a Dremel kit that turns your Dremel into a router. http://www.leevalley.com/en/wood/page.aspx?p=49987&cat=1,130,43409

I would like to use it for cutting a groove for t-molding.

Does anyone know what bit to use for this?

You would use a slot cutting bit.  These usually come with a 1/4 inch shaft and will not fit your dremel.  Previous discussions of this topic have determinated that a dremel does not have enough power to safely use a slot cutting bit.

Honestly don't. I bought the same attachment because i only had to make one edge on a control panel and it couldn't even do that properly the dremel was way too under powered.

I'm kind of in the same situation. I'm on a very tight budget and i really don't feel justified in buying a router just for a few cuts. I am quite handy with a dremel but like many here, i strongly doubt it has enough power to get through mdf in this manner. I did however find an interesting project using the dremel mini saw blades. Not totally sure this would work but if a dremel would ever get through this material, i would suspect this could very well be a viable way to do it. Guy even created a guard out of just a scrap piece of PVC.

if you make several small passes the dremel should work.  it doesnt have enough power to make a slot cut in one pass,  probably need 3. 

also if you dont want to get a slot cutting bit, you could always use the standard plunge/cutting bit and set a jig up to run the dremel along the edge and not along the face of the material. Again with this make 2-3 passes, puts a lot less strain on the tool/bits.

I used the mini circular saw blades to do it on my new cabinet. Took a while and had to stop every so often to let it cool down but it worked perfectly. Just got to make sure you get it in the middle

I also used one of these blades+ dremel and router kit for the t-molding slot on my first project.  Not as easy/safe as a proper router and blade, but it worked out ok.

I am thinking about applying t-molding to my bartop which only has 11mm MDF. How safe would you say it is to cut a slot for t-molding on this? I did cut a nice groove/slot for the bezel by hand using a handsaw and the MDF didnt break up or anything even with a 3mm wide cut.

I have a dremel tool as well which I havent used for this project but perhaps I should try it out with a sawblade and a rig to make even passes at correct height. I dont care if I have to do 10 passes, one thing I have learned is to be patient with every part of the project or it turns out badly.

Craigslist has routers for cheap. You can rent routers for cheap. I bet you know someone who owns a router you can borrow. I suppose you have to ask yourself how much your time is worth, and how safely you think you can do this. I'm not saying it can't be done, and I'm not saying it can't be done safely. But if I were trying to make 3 or 4 passes to save a little money about half way through the first side I would get annoyed and start rushing things.
