Slotted router bit for T-molding UK?
« on: September 26, 2012, 07:30:25 am »
Hello,
I'm having trouble sourcing a router bit for T-Molding.

It's a case of 'rip-off Britain'. I can see they are about $14 in USA but in the UK there are only a few suppliers and they range in price, averaging about £40 ($64).

You'd think one of the arcade component suppliers (or even someone selling on this or other forums) would source them and sell them at a decent price.

For a one-off job there's no way I'm paying that price, so unless somebody knows of a place I'll just sand my edges round or find a wood shop who'll do it.

I haven't.

But it'll be http://www.gremlinsolutions.co.uk/

They seem the only place around. If you add postage to Ultimarc then there's no difference in cost. I'm planning on 2 players with six buttons in Street Fighter layout and there's enough room (66cm) on the panel for a trackball and spinner if I want. After that I'm going to stick on a couple of AimTrack light guns.

Hi,

did you have any luck with the router bit..

ive just purchased my wood and a router today and am hoping to make a start this weekend.. my router came with a 3mm router bit, but the t-moulding should be 2.3mm. im wondering if .7 of a mm will make a differnce to the fit..

Most t moldings use 1/16 inch which is about 1.5mm

the one i need is  7/64 which is about 2.7mm. So if yours is not the exception You could be making it too wide. Though the size 3/32 - 2.3mm - is the width of the barbs for the 1.5mm molding. If i were you i'd double check the size.

These imperial sizes and different denominators do your head in i think.

Just shows the markup though. The bit at wealdon and elsewhere is about £26. In the US it is £8. I was buying my t-moulding from the US as they don't stock my type here so it was cheaper to buy the bit (and t-molding) and pay postage than buy them from UK excluding the postage.

Well, my slotted bit and t-molding arrived today (from groovygamegear), took about 9 days in total, so not bad  :applaud:

I paid $54 dollars in total, but if I bought the 'standard' t-molding it would have been $50 (i.e. about £30). The molding looks absolutely beautiful too and seems to fit exactly th 18mm MDF and won't need trimming (well, from a quick try).

Given if I bought the t-molding from one of the few UK sites it would have cost almost the same without the bit, so I'd recommend anyone from the UK do this.

Not sure the price is about markup.  The US has a slightly larger population, and a larger proportion of woodworkers owing to the space available.

It gets worse here in Italy, the price is double that of UK.  I could not find the slot cutter for less than £60.

I do try to source locally where possible, and then from UK, with states as last resort, to support local trade, and reduce my carbon handprint....

I got my t-moulding from gremlin, and it was not so much more expensive, and sometimes, the delivery man bringing me a parcel from the US will charge me a 40% import duty, so it sort of evens out.

The thing I like about Gremlin is they have responded to every email I sent them, even the most stupid questions and they were very helpful on the phone too. That alone has made me buy everything from them regardless (the thing I bought above they don't sell). GGG and T-Molding could learn a lot from the above with regard customer service (i.e. actually responding to people regardless how busy they are).

btw, I created a little video of using my new slotted bit to cut the groove for my arcade cabinet.

Hi Chucklepie...

Do you mind if i ask about the delivery cost from GGG..

Ive priced up moulding and the router bit at $42.. but the delivery to the uk came in at another $54 !!!

Did you email them and ask for a slower but cheaper delivery option ?

Thanks

This is what I bought: http://negnegneg.blogspot.co.uk/2012/10/day-14-first-order-tricky-bits-of-wood.html

Did you select the standard US postal service as that is a fraction of the cost of the DHL option and my stuff arrived in about 8 days.

I bought the most expensive T-molding at the site ($0.65 for 20 foot came to $13), the router bit cost $19.95. Total of $33. Delivery came to about $20 (the exact bill is in the house), i.e. a total of $54, which is £33.

Go to somewhere in the uk (e.g. Gremlin solutions) and you are looking at £20 plus delivery for the T-molding alone (about three times the cost effectively), and another £27 for the router bit, so that's almost £20 more in the UK.

I know this is an old thread, but I just wanted to say thanks - this was immensely useful as this was one part i was really struggling to track down at a reasonable price!
