I assume you just watched the Pilot.  It gets better.  At one point in the series it was the best thing on TV.  The ending is a little weak but it is worth the ride.

Agreed, there are some brilliant moments in the show, worth watching... but like so much serialized Sci-fi, they lose their way and things get pretty convoluted.
Completed projects: Pac bartop (Plug & Play), 30th Anniversary Pac cab (MAME), Point Blank (PS1), Centipede (arcade hardware- light restore), VS. Super Mario Bros (arcade hardware- light restore) Tetris Cocktail (SNES), Arcade Classics upright (60-in-1, then MAME), Multi-Raiden (arcade hardware). Pac Man vs.(Gamecube),

Working on: Pinball Re-theme, Homebrew arcade arena shooter

I haven't seen the new one.

I had never seen the original so my kids and I started watching through it last month.  At one point my son turns to me and asks, "How exactly did they not get sued a million times by George Lucas?  Even the title fonts scream Star Wars."

...and if someone runs down a hallway screaming STARBUCK one more time I might have to start doing it myself at work.

I loved the entire series from start to finish, even the ending. The ending is one you either love or hate it seems. We're re-watching it now with my kids (not the younger one though!) and they're hooked. I think it's probably one of the top 5 best SF series of all time.

I think it's a great drama that just happens to have occurred in a sci-fi setting.

I don't have an issue with the finale.  A couple of episodes before the finale seemed like the writers decided that they had to figure out a way to end it and just pulled it outta their rears.  You know, fighting between everyone, go to commercial, come back and "hey, let's work together!"....

The series was fantastic right up until the ending....  it's probably the worst ending to a series in scifi history. I mean it makes absolutely no sense and to me the explaination to all the visions and wierdness that had went on over hte past several years was a grand cop out.

It is still worth watching, just expect to throw things at the screen starting at the last half season.

I was okay with the actual final episode.  The "twist" was good but the execution was not up to par.  Some of the last few episodes were just painful.  They didn't resolve everything they could have and (from what I recall) they had several filler episodes in the last 6 or so.   I agree with Hoopz that they didn't know exactly what they were doing at times towards the end.

All that aside it was a great series.

The actress who played Starbuck is in the new A&E series Longmire.  Both she and the show are great.

Got to meet her a couple of weeks ago and got my picture with her. Very nice, down to earth and friendly. She was cooing over a baby a couple in line before me had brought. Was a funny counterpoint to her misfit Starbuck role.

I only made it a few episodes into season 3 I think.  While the series had a few episodes that I really enjoyed.......overall it was rather a "meh" for me.  Solid acting from some of the key players is what held it together as long as it did........till blah blah blah plan blah blah blah god blah blah blah ugh.   :blah:

That's really cool.  I actually like her better in Longmire than BG.  Seems like she has matured somewhat as an actor.  Glad to hear she seems down to earth.

I've actually met her, Six/Caprica (Tricia Hilfer), Col Tye's wife Ellen whose real name escapes me, Jewel Stait, and George Takei among others who have all been really nice, approachable, appreciative of their fans, etc.  Patrick Stewart, Leonard Nimoy, and William Shatner? Fairly aloof and stand-offish. Disappointing.

If you are talking about Caprica, then you are right.  Reimagined BSG, then you are wrong.

I had such high hopes for Caprica, was very disappointed. However, I thought they were just starting to get to where it might be getting interesting. I was sad to see it cancelled. If the second season had been like the first I'd have given up, but I thought it had unrealized potential. I was ticked off completely when they gave up on the new show also ...

Mind you I agree with you, but I'll play devil's advocate.

Any of the Star Treks
The Mid-Seasons of Star Gate SG1
Definately Star Gate Universe
Farscape
As dumb as it was.. Heroes
Firefly
Doctor Who
Torchwood
I'm sure there are more, I just can't think of anymore off the top of my head.

As someone previously stated, a lot of the BSG reboot was held together purely on superior actors who gave superior performances.  The acting on that show was probably better than any other scifi show I can think of.  But when you start looking at the plot is where the whole thing falls apart.  In the beginning there was this whole mystery as to why the cylons had taken human form and why they wiped out the colonies and the show keeps building suspense based on that mystery..... and they stretch it too thin.... and it falls on it's face with a terrible explaination that makes no sense what-so-ever.

I think everybody should watch the first season... they can skip the second... better watch the third... you probably should skip the ending unless you enjoy throwing things at your tv.  ;)

Season 1 was hit and miss.  Seems like they were still figuring things out, particularly the tone of the show.  Season 2 was fantastic.

Liked the ending, but thought the very very end (i.e. the very last scenes) were pointless.  It's like they were trying to give the series an even broader scope, but it felt unnecessary.

There aren't any. I have a hard time going back and watching most things from my youth, for the same reason. Some slight sci-fi-y exceptions are Twilight Zone and Outer Limits, just because they're fun.

I'm trying very hard not to give things away but I don't know how anyone with a rational mind could have liked the ending.

It was like saying the cylons were made by Santa Claus..... the reasons there were human cylons?  Santa Claus.  All those cryptic clues that were just forgotten about and never resolved?  Well you know how Santa Claus can be.

It was a lazy writer's way of working themselves out the massive corner they had walked into via all of the stupid plot twists.

Sounds like Lost

I never understood why that was such a mystery.  Everyone was saying halfway through the first season that they were in purgatory.
But they weren't in purgatory, they were on a magic island.  However the alternate universe of the final season was purgatory (at least in my mind it was, a lot of Lost fanatics will argue that everything, including the alternate universe, was real).

I hated both the ending to Lost and the ending of BG.

Currently, my fav Sci-fi is Fringe. The show has 12 episode left, I think.  JJ Abrams seems to have learned to stop throwing in stupid curveballs in the plot every 5 minutes like Lost. Episodes actually accomplish something as well.

Lost lasted about a season and a half too long. The show would have been far much better as a mini-series with a defined ending. I really liked the show when they were digging deeper into the hidden facilities in the island. They then ruined it by making dharma simply a lame hippy commune and then show went downhill with time mages, alternate universes, and magical immortal Island groundskeepers.

Fringe was good until it went all multi-verse, it jumped the shark when Nimoy walked out.

Naw, it was all monster-of-the-week X-Files before the dimensions plot-line, I think the switch saved the show.

I agree, the multiverse worked well. I think the shark jumping was how many random supernatural abilities they would conveniently give Olivia at the exact right moment.

Overall, I was ready for the show to end until they did that future episode. If done right, it could be good. It reminded me of what I wished they did with the reboot of V. We will see if they finish the future plot well in the last episodes.

All that stuff is 'this is what will dazzle the kids this year/week'. They're like Twilight Zone, but worse: very little science, and lots of soap opera.

BSG just begins dumb. If Earth-like planets are the sole populated volumes (which is ridiculous past a certain technological level), then you have no 'Colonies'. Even with hyperdrive, planets are too far away for each other to care about. The whole British colonial model is just stupid.

And the whole, 'the last time they wanted a faster computer, you saw what happened' thing was.........senseless.
