Arcade cab pros & cons
« on: August 26, 2012, 03:14:17 am »
If I have this topic in the wrong area, please move it.

I am in the middle of creating a presentation to go along with a proposal that I made for the arcade project I want to do. I want to look at the pros & cons of owning an arcade cabinet capable of playing nearly any pinball machine, classic video game, and any console game available. If the pros outweigh the cons, then there's a great chance the project will happen as planned. Any help on this matter would really be appreciated.

There are thrice as many pros and cons as there are arcade owners with ---uvulas---. So you're likely to get the entire gamut. Most of it boils down to opinion really. So here's mine.

I'm of the firm belief that Pinball's, arcade games and console games are within entirely different classes. I'm of the firm belief that console games are meant to be played while sitting half-naked on your couch with a HUGE beer at your crotch. While there are certainly exceptions (Neo Geo) and numerous ports of arcade games, that statement still holds. Console games are console games meant to be played on a couch. Build a box to emulate all your favorites, but they stay on the couch.

Arcade games on the other hand are better played on a cab. The feel is just different and having access to the unique controls just puts it into a different league than consoles. Sure, you can play them on the couch, but you're missing the allure. Arcade games are designed to attract you, take your quarters, then kick you in the crotch. The fatique of standing for three straight hours on the same quarters as you wail through wave after wave of enemies just can't be matched on a couch.

Pinball machines are an entirely different breed altogether and I wouldn't even consider such a build in an arcade cab. Granted, there are some very beautiful builds but.... I just think it's an odd choice. Like virtualizing a kiss.

That approach goes back to early twencen ideations of physical event modeling. Eek. And it's a dumb approach. They have articulate robotic simulacra. Use those as learning devices fed by human action. Because why settle for a go-between, when you can just buy yourself an android and, in essence, have the real thing?? Of course, you have to enlist/hire someone skilled an all to teach the device. What's even better is that androids will be able to share data, and then at least one of you will be a good kisser!  (This thread should be in MAIN to get the attention it deserves!!)

ANYways. I think the OP is saying they're trying to sell the wife on a unit in the house.

I'm married with 2.5 kids. Sitting around half-naked is usually a rarity. The beer is a requirement.

While I was allowed a beer or two at parties I went to with my parents, it wasn't something I had or necessarily wanted often, and certainly wasn't something I had while playing our Odyssey2...although sometimes soda was in hand.
