Which 64-bit OS do you guys run for mame?
« on: August 22, 2012, 10:03:02 pm »
WinXP or Win7?

I'm leaning toward WinXP since I was able to locate a 64-bit stripped down version, but wondering if there would be any advantages to being more current and using Windows 7. Can't seem to find a stripped down 64-bit version of it though.

So what are you guys using?

i use win7 x64 on everything.  Main reason for me is I like using win7 a hell of a lot better than xp to use. I honestly can't stand using xp anymore.
Check out my current 3 machine build:

Win 7. XP 32bit is great but XP 64bit isn't.

You are talking about on a cab right?

Xp 64 all the way.  Win 7 takes up too much resources and it has issues with unsigned drivers and all manner of minor annoyances.  Win 7 is a better OS all the way around, but when you are building a cab you don't need any of it's improved features.

Also for the record, win 7 64 bit is the superior version, the 32 bit version is identical to the 64 bit only.... wait for it.... more bits!  ;)

i agree with everything in the post. winxp 64bit if your just using it for a cab. no sense in the extra bloat when it wont be used. if i hadnt left the code attached to the pc case i gave my bro i would be installing 64bit xp on my mamepc now.

Are you guys aware of any guides that let you take a fresh Win7 install and trim it down to remove all of the unnecessary services and whatnot?

Doesn't really remove anything, but disables a lot of stuff:
http://www.blackviper.com/2009/10/01/black-vipers-windows-7-super-tweaks/

A lot of people post here with problems caused by using TinyXP or MicroXP (and usually fail to mention they aren't using a full windows build).
IMO, it's better just to disable the services.  The effect is the same, but they are still there if needed.

i'm running win7 x64 on a dual core AMD (~3ghz) with absolutely no issue. If you're running modernish hardware there is no reason to waste your time with XP.

win7 is not as easy to hide as XP is. plus the higher overhead of win7. and there is more tweaks and programs in general written for XP that may or may not work on win7. tho atm i run win7 on my htpc which is also doubling as my arcade pc.

i am fortunate then, that I'm not concerned about completely hiding windows and that my dual core AMD reduces any concerns about OS overhead. I also run vanilla MAME and MaLa. I guess I'm the minority though.
