What CRT TV is a good fit for an Astro City? (noob)
« on: August 15, 2012, 05:55:41 pm »
Hi,

I am restoring an Astro City cabinet and currently do not have a monitor or chassis. I would like to put a CRT TV in it (not an arcade monitor for cost reasons) with pre-existing mounting brackets that would be a good fit. Anyone here have experience with this? I am in the US.

Thanks!
HWB

so far i remember the astro comes with a curved toshiba tube like my old sega naomi . here in euroland i would check the market for an old 15k scart tv with toshi a68kju or kzn tube . or maybe a 29-27 inch semi curved philips . both will fit 100 % into the mounting brackets . the monitor bezel may not be 100 % snug , there might be a gap , but maybe a naomi semi flat bezel is working on the astro , i dont know for sure . sold my astro some time ago . those old curved 15 k toshis are very rare . i only know a few old grundigs with this kinda tube .

during my last year visit to canada i noticed they had lots of toshiba tvs with yuv input . i should have asked my bro if it handles progressive mode 640x480 60 hertz via yuv like some european tvs via vga input . i do have some vga tv to arcade pimp cabs with x1 , x360 and dc , but i dont like lowres on a 29 inch monster screen . lg ( philips ) could be another alternative . some of them are coming with vga input but flat tube .

Many North American TV do handle progressive (31k) via the YPbPr component inputs.  Look for the "EDTV" ("Enhanced Definition Television") designation.  There were popular around 2003-2005 before LCD/plasma and widescreen CRTs took off (most of which were 1080i fixed mode with scalers).  Some will also advertise that they're "HD Ready", though that can also mean it has an ATSC tuner built in or simply that it will accept HD (720p/1080i) and downscale it.  The TV makers had some pretty slimy marketing going on back then...

Unfortunately, some of those EDTV sets will re-scale EVERYTHING you feed in to 480p, even if it's already 480p, destroying any carefully created pixel perfect graphics.  You may just have to try several models until you find one locally that does what you want.  Fortunately, they're cheap enough these days.

Thanks for the input! I'm trying to track down a cheap Toshiba 27". Some are still asking $100 in my area...
