Artwork challenge
« on: October 07, 2003, 06:58:16 am »
So I put the challenge out to snaaake in another thread but for the general audience:  would it be possible to recreate some of the classic characters (pacman, donkey kong, q-bert, dig dug etc) in the "fighting" style poses--complete with ripped shirts, bulging muscles, insane looks in their eyes and windblown hair?  I am definitely no artist so I thought this could be addressed by some people with talent
its better to not post and be thought a fool, then to whip out your keyboard and remove all doubt...

umm,you do know I never drew any of the pictures myself right ?
I am nothing but the "photoshop guy" just like most people here.  ;)
We get the images from www.gamegen.com

Maybe 3rdmacman would have able to draw something but I dont think its an easy task.

no worries man--I wasn't implying that your rep is on the line or anything ;)--more of a general idea tossed into the ether sort of thing--you never know who comes through these boards!

heh I was seriously considering sketching some type of Donkey Kong ripping his shirt off Hulkamania style...but then had a thought: he wouldn't be Donkey Kong.  We all know the classic chars (pacman, donkey kong, joust guy, etc), from those few, original poses and depictions - like original sidearts and marquees.

My point is that they would probably lose their 'classic' air if you had them doing street fighter-type poses - if only because they'd be instantly unrecognizable.  Just something to consider - but good luck ;)

I can see the humor in the idea, but in all honesty I don't think anyone will invest the time in doing it.  The main reason is your mixing your apples with your oranges.  Fighter fans care very little about the classics (at least in general, don't hit me guys)  and people who are hardcore classic fans generally hate fighter games.

I'm one of those rare few who like both, but even I tend to lean more towards original artwork anymore because there are so many lame fighter collages out there that it's been done to death.  There is such a thing as too much of a good thing ya know.  Capcom / SNK style artwork is beautiful but it's somewhat less special now days as every other cab uses it.  If a person were to rework the original characters I would hope that they wouldn't try to emulate this rather played out style of artwork.  And just on the flip side of things taking stock classic artwork and making new designs out of it is played out too.

The real idea is to get people to actually draw their aw by hand instead of photo-shoping it.  (Which I'm guilty of myself)

Even though the "fighting" style of artwork may be played out (I tend to agree on this..mostly) taking that style and applying it to classic characters has never been done that I know of.  For someone like me who has an appreciation for monty python and other slightly off center humour, having a pacman in one of those poses would be perfect--I mean how ridiculous is a q-bert pumped up ready to fight or a donkey kong ripping his shirt off or maybe pacman with his arms stretched up with lightning coming out of it.  Its definitley not for everybody but I think we could find a niche for it.
