Front end for Tempest cabinet?
« on: July 25, 2012, 01:13:56 pm »
I have a Tempest cabinet with the original control panel (spinner to mouse & buttons to keyboard) and I'm looking for a front end for it.  The PC is an Athlon XP 1.2GHz, nForce 420 (GeForce 2mx) and runs XP with a 768x1024 vertical monitor.  The simpler the better (my current list is ~100 games, but that will probably come down once I've played them).  I'm thinking a scrolling list of marquees or something like the cylinder arcade from 3D-Arcade.  (I'd use 3-D Arcade, but I'd prefer one which is still being enhanced.)

2004 Tempest cabinet & CP > 75% (sold)
2017 Raspberry Pi Zero W w/ Lakka microconsole 50%
2021 Vertical Bartop - in progress > 80%, 100% functional (sleeping)

I have configured 3D Arcade as the front end using the cylarcade layout.  The learning curve is pretty steep, but I got where I wanted with the assistance of the forum.

Wouldn't Hyperspin and a spinner be a good combination?
Building, collecting and playing arcade machines :)

The simpler the better

Have a look at http://www.mgalaxy.com/ if you want something simple that's still being maintained. Only works with MAME though.

Possibly.  I don't know how well the wheel display works with a vertical monitor.  I also don't know how well it will work "out of the box", i.e. without a lot of time & customization.

Plus, there's just something cool about having the 3D cabinets as part of the display.

But does it work with a spinner?  (I wasn't able to see anything in the online docs.)  And, as I said above, the 3D Arcade provides a cool looking screen rather than just text and screenshots.
