optimize Win98SE for arcade cabinet
« on: October 06, 2003, 01:05:11 pm »
Is there any info on how to optimize Win98SE to run in a cabinet? It seems that a lot of windows features should be turned off to avoid stealing cycles from MAME or to simply pop-up windows in your cabinet.
Examples would be:
- turn off daytime saving adjustment notification
- turn off automatic windows upadte
- turn off automatic virus scanning (I'm running NAV)
-etc...

Run msconfig.exe and make sure that unnecessary startup items are not running behind the scenes.

you could try windows 98lite to optimize up the wazoo... remove IE, replace bloated active desktop with win95 desktop, boots up quicker... good way to get more mileage out of an old machine. (DOS is also a good way to optimize w98, by not booting in to windoze)

google for it.

Its worked well for me in the past.
