Batman: The Dark Knight Rises
« on: July 19, 2012, 05:01:24 am »
Just go enjoy it (",)

My reviews are never very objective, in case you never noticed. And this one might be tempered by the fact that I had to rush to get to the cinema, and spending maybe an hour or so wondering when I should go take a leak. It's anathema for me to get up during a movie, but it's 3 hours long! Strangely, the second half was more enjoyable than the first half  ;D

There is no nudity. Anne Hathaway is looking good. I really, really liked how this ended as I'm a bit tired of rival Marvel ending all of their movies with a Battle Royale.

4/5

Oh, and for many years, I used to play spot Mo Henry when sitting through the credits. She is a negative cutter. Very prolific. Watch any Hollywood movie from the last 15 or so years, chances are she did it. Of course, less and less movies now are filmed on actual film. This one was. And guess what?

MO HENRY!

:woot

Quote
my score for recent movies you may have seen:

5/5 - The Way Back, The Kings Speech, Michael Clayton, In Bruges, Gran Torino, Mary and Max

4.5/5 - Taken, Iron Man, Reign Over Me, Watchmen, The girl with the dragon tattoo

4/5 - True Grit, Traitor, Bedtime Stories, Sunshine, pineapple express

3.5/5 - 300, Max Payne, You dont mess with the Zohan, Yes Man

3/5 - That new Indiana Jones flick, Disturbia, That new TMNT flick,

2.5/5 - Angels and Demons

2/5 - The Love Guru. Note: My 2 is probably someone elses 1. Just leaving room for worse!

A lot of the stuff was filmed a block away from where I work.  Getting into town was a nightmare when they were filming.

This is out?  I may go and see it, though I'll probably wait for it to stream.

You can't knock Nolan for Inception, I think, as that was a popculture flick.

I'm going to see it tomorrow.  The cinema close to me opens at usually 1pm, but I think they are expecting huge numbers as their doors are opening at 9am.

The kids are still at school so the odds of getting a good seat is in my favour.

I'm looking forward to it.   :applaud:

I think the movie is a fun ride.  There's a fair amount going on. I'm gonna see it at least once more. IDK if it counts for me tho, I work in a theater and I love batman. I think everyone and their grandma should see it at least twice.   :notworthy: Batman

I honestly think I'm waiting for this one on BluRay unless someone goes, "hey, let's go see Batman!" a month from now when it's still in theaters.  Nolan wore out his welcome with me on Inception.

Inception was awesome! But if you didn't like that, don't bother with Batman I guess...

Wow. Inception was amazing.  To each their own i guess.  I personally like when a movie comes out that thinks similarly to how i do; Inception, The Matrix, Men in Black (the very end sequence with the marble).

I think I agree that Inception is his best movie. There's a huge, gaping logic gap that makes the dream levels thing not work, but the whole concept is so interesting and mind-bending that the plot hole is easy to miss. And then, beyond that, the cast is so great and well written, and the sets and scenarios are so fun and inventive, it's hard to dislike.

Saw it today and I give it 3/5.  Looks like there was at least two movies wort of content squeezed into one.

It started slow and had to go into warp speed 30 minutes towards the end.

Maybe the Blue Ray release will have a better cut of the film.

The second one was much better if not suffering the same flaw.

picture of wounded kid and the dumbass parents

and the shooter bought an assault rifle that hold HUNDRED rounds. this is the kind of world we live in. anyone can legally buy an assault rifle from 'hobby' shops(guessing gun laws aren't strict down south)

I'm just about to watch Inception on DVD, since it's been mentioned. Just realised a whole bunch of people from that movie were in this new batman flick- Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cottilard, Tom Hardy, and Michael Caine...

I think this tragedy is awful and I'm not trying to be crass but WTF is up with the ribbon?  Does that strike anyone else as being in terrible taste?  I dislike ribbons in general, being a soldier I see them as another way to say "I'm doing my part" without actually doing anything, but putting a black ribbon in the middle of the bat symbol completely steals the focus from the victims and makes it about the ---goshdarn--- movie.  Maybe my panties are in a twist over nothing but if heaven forbid there was ever a tragedy at a McDonalds I was at the last thing I would want smacked around the country would be a golden arches with a ribbon superimposed on it.

I sincerely doubt whoever come up with that ribbon/bat thing was thinking that when they did it, but yeah, it doesn't come off well to me either.

God knows that idiot's going to get 10x more media coverage than anyone in the military, all of whom deserve it 10x more.

We are all guilty of derailment  of threads.  The horrors  experienced in that cinema is something we can never imagine.  How many of us have been to a midnight screening, enjoyed the film and got home safe.  I find this act disgusting, and possibly a death knell for the cinema industry in  countries where it is legal to buy a gun and order 6000 rounds.

I think this thread is a fitting tribute to those fans who died for no reason.  We should respect those who comment on this subject as the film will forever be associated with this vile act on innocent women, children and men who gave their life protecting others from that Madman.

Censorship has no place here.

That's pretty narrow.  Either way, coming in there blasting yer 9 sideways because some other gang members are there and blowing up a bus-stop...or doing this is totally different......red herring.

I don't remember *any* illigal aliens who planned something like this for months and then carried it out, so red herring.

This dude was coco-puffs.  He planned it out, purchased the materials, put together all this stuff, dyed his hair like the joker, set up a trap for police at his home, and walked into a theatre and shot a bunch of people after tossing 2 tear-gas canisters into a crowded theatre.

This is different.  The others are for destruction and death....this was something else.

And, yes...I believe that this dude will "accidentally" end up in gen-pop.  It will be a "clerical error" or a " breach of protocol" but it will happen.  I just hope he tells his story first.

Well if he thinks he is the Joker why don't they do the Batman interrogation on him? Seems fitting for such a piece of trash.

Like if this was drug gang or terrorist related you could almost say it is expected since that's what they do. But just some regular everyday guy? Makes you loose hope in people. They should just get the reasons why he did it out of him and throw him to the other prisoners. Or if he somehow gets off and is set free someone will take care of this.....thing. Calling him a person is an insult to people.

There is absolutely no chance he's just going to be put in the general prison population. One of the worst shooting massacres ever (until that Norwegian dude) was in Australia. That guy (Martin Bryant) is still alive and well in prison.

He actually died from having his head bashed in.  Don't project your anal rape onto everyone else.

(he wasn't in the general population, either)

Does anyone else remember that being reported in the media? I sure do. Either way, he didn't last in the pen.

Wow. That's... dumb.

My point wasn't to censor the thread discussion.  You dispense insults and jump to conclusions far too fast.  My point was that perhaps some people would want to actually discuss the *movie* and not the shooting that will forever be associated with it.  Another thread to discuss the shooting seems a better approach.  The thread title doesn't exactly say anything about it, nor does the initial post make any reference to it.  Seemed like an honest approach to talk about the movie itself.

Edited to satisfy LeChuck's anal-ness.

He actually died from having his head bashed in.  Don't project your anal rape onto everyone else.

(he wasn't in the general population, either)

Does anyone else remember that being reported in the media? I sure do. Either way, he didn't last in the pen.

While Dahmer was beaten with a broom handle, you may be mixing up the sodomy bit with the story of Abner Louima - a suspect who, in 97, had been sodomized with a plunger handle while in custody by an NYPD officer (who went to jail for that). And Abner didn't die, he got a big fat settlement from the city and is doing well from what I've read.

spoiler?

My biggest gripe with the movie is that in the 2 hour and 45 minute batman movie there's like 25 minutes of batman.

Went to the theater tonight. I was tempted to see Batman, but saw Moonrise Kingdom instead. My god, what a spectacular decision. Moonrise Kingdom is just phenomenal, beginning to end. It's not for everyone, I'll grant, but if you liked Fantastic Mr. Fox (if you have any character at all you LOVED it, btw), Moonrise Kingdom will be the best movie you've seen maybe since Fantastic Mr. Fox. At least since Midnight In Paris.

I saw 3rd Batman the other day. I thought it was fine. I suppose it wrapped up the trilogy all right, but I didn't think it was nearly as good as the second one. I don't know. I had a really rowdy/obnoxious crowd in my theater, so I might try watching it again later.

Moonrise Kingdom is an amazing movie. Basically, it is the embodiment of what every kid hopes Scouting will be like.  ;)

However, I actually didn't care for Fantastic Mr. Fox much at all (no character I guess).

Clearly.  There's no other reasonable explanation.

If you find yourself with nothing else to do sometime, I recommend watching it again. I bet you feel differently the second time. Especially if you liked Moonrise Kingdom.

I liked Fantastic Mr. Fox a lot.  I suppose it helped that I loved the book when I was a kid.  That being said it is the only Wes Anderson movie I would watch a second time.  I just don't get him.  He is like a modern Woody Allen.

Loved the 3rd Batman movie.   I think the 2nd movie is better but that's not really a fair comparison.  I was blown away by the acting in this one.  I'm not a big fan of Ann Hathaway but she hits it out of the park as Selena Kyle.  There were echoes of Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns as well.

My biggest gripe with the movie is that in the 2 hour and 45 minute batman movie there's like 25 minutes of batman.

I agree. The movie still worked for me but I question that decision.

Moonrise Kingdom is much more like Fantastic Mr. Fox than any of his previous movies. I'm actually surprised that Flip_Willie liked one and not the other. They're very similar. I've also never seen any of Wes Anderson's films more than once besides Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Saw the movie Friday at a matinee and really liked it.  Didn't LOVE it, but really liked it.

Think the problem I had was that I've never been a fan of the whole Raza Guhl (sp) storyline in 1 and this continued it.  I thought Bane was great, I really liked Catwoman more than I thought I would (though after seeing her in "Love and Other Drugs" I was less fearfull of Anne H in the role.  Note, you see her naked often in L&OD).  But the whole former master looking to destroy Gotham thing, meh.  Ending was really good though, powerful, I stayed away from spoilers/reviews before the movie so didn't see the Robin thing coming, though it was really cool while it was happening.

Freaked out my wife when the scene straight from the comic happened and Bane had Batman over his head and then dropped him to his knee.  I imagined that they would do that, but then during the movie wondered if they really would, and then I was like "Whoa, they're really going to BREAK him!!"  Think I got a little loud and giddy at that point, sorry hon! :)

Overall really good, basic premise of storyline aside.

However I made damn sure I knew where the exit was and checked over my shoulder a few times during the film.  Ass.

The first two films, while great, had several stretches of slow pacing. This new one didn't really have any that I noticed. Some people are saying otherwise about the beginning, but not me. I think the third film is actually my favorite.

I think Nolan was still on his "I can make a Bond movie" high from Inception, because WOW, that opening plane sequence was awesome!

I saw it on opening day here in Australia too much to the dismay of a few American mates...

I loved it. It seemed much more balanced than The Dark Knight, good performances all around with out the one standout, Joker. My only two gripes were that Bain was just a bit difficult to understand at times, just me?, but the big on for me is how dumbed down it was... Every reference to the earlier movies was accompanied by a clip just in case you haven't seen them and am I the only person who thought Bruce Wayne should not have been shown on screen in the cafe? It should have been just a nod and a smile from Alfred?

Did anyone get the point of the scar on Marion Collitard's back? They made a big point of it if it was nothing...

  post lost.

Bane uses drugs to roid up but the movie doesn't have him do this.  He gets a mask to sound like Sean Connery to deal with the pain while wearing his breastplate when he fights Batman.  It probably has to do with antidrug campaigns so I'll let it slide.

Bane knows where Fox hides Batmans prototypes despite the location belonging to a separate company and being off the books.

I'm pretty sure Dagget was important to some plot lines in the comics (made Clay Face) but apparently they don't need him cause the League of Shadows are going to be at it again in the fourth movie.

The movie length to Batman ratio is horrible but even considering that it was somewhat enjoyable (I hate everything so it had a steep hill to climb).  People were pretty quiet (someone laughed when Bane commented on the kid singing) and the people in my row annoyed me greatly.  Getting up 7 times before the movie starts, trying to steal my armrest, and yeah to hell with going to the movies again.  I did get a laugh out of the Terminator Salvation shooter being defective.  The start buttons only skipped the video intro but wouldn't let you start playing.  Somehow it had 7 dollars of credit (9 dollars a half hour after I first checked) so there was that.  It should've been a Wii game.

Yeah, pretty much Inception = Nolan's "Bond" film and The Dark Knight (not Rises) = Nolan's version of "Heat"

I'm cool with both of those concepts.

I got about 6 minutes through the video, he said "ummm" or "ahhhh" 97 times (I'm sure if you edited out the ummms/ahhhhs it was only about 2 minutes of dialog. I had to stop.  Why didn't he write down what he wanted to say, then practice saying it?

The only reason I asked if you'd seen that video was because of the Rocky III mention. James pretty much recorded that on a whim, which is why it's kinda rough. Anyone familiar with his AVGN videos knows he makes better videos usually.

Cool.  What minute mark does he talk about Rocky?

The Rocky III feeling came from the way they built up Bane as being more "hungry" than Batman.  Alfred even at one point gives a lecture to Bruce about Bane and I could almost hear Burgess Meredith saying "he will kill you to death inside of three rounds."  Then Wayne has to find his "edge" again in prison.  Even the fight at the end seemed more like a boxing match.  Good stuff.

Saw the trailer for Moonrise at the Batman show. Because it's not a huge blockbuster, it's probably going to take some time to come down under. Blockbusters they tend to make sure they premier on the same day all over the world, which is why I sometimes get a review in before even you 'mercans have seen it, since I come from the future  ;D

I can't wait for Moonrise though. Looks excellent (",)

Although in all fairness, I'm not a big follower of his "off the cuff" videos for that reason and largely prefer his scripted stuff (e.g. AVGN).

How did Batman escape a desert and show up just in the.... ... just urgh.

pretty sure it wasn't some random desert. that prison area was around the football stadium.

ALSO:

I didn't understand the part where batman meets bane at the sewer place. what..he just went there to defeat bane and all his goons with guns? wtf was his plan lol.. :dunno

DKR was allright but nolan needed to get rid of some dumb/pointless cutscenes. I think it was at least half hour too long.

TDK was obviously better. the joker set the bar too high for anyone. it was much more exciting and stylish. TDK kinda made movie history. just my humble opinion.

If you are referring to after Bane liberates Gotham I believe the criminals were endorsing him since he opened doors for them.  If you mean why they didn't turn on him a day later its probably because his Banees controlled the urban themed tanks.

As far as the rubble goes I suppose those were mostly traffic cops since they were going underground to deal with weapons trafficking and not building violations which would require police that could move rubble.  Either way sending the entire police force underground was stupid to begin with since only the SWAT units would be capable of dealing with the known situation at the time with minimal loses.  Of course a more interesting scenario involving other Batman villains keeping the police at bay wouldn't fly since Nolan only likes Scarecrow (three movies compared to everyone else).

Also missed opportunities for Bane jokes was disappointing.

The setup for Escape from New Gotham could have taken a backseat to the interactions of the big players (catwoman, drake, bane, and scarecrow (who else was on the ballot for the judge's seat the ventriloquist mob boss?))

A scene after the credits explains how he survived the atomic blast that would send radiation towards the city anyway.

I liked the movie but, like Return of the Jedi, it was easily my least favorite of the trilogy.

This movie was way LONG and it didn't need to be. Felt like they had 2 movies on their hands and they tried to cram a less interesting version of the stories into one long film.  I would have enjoyed it thoroughly had it not gotten tedious in places. That was probably my biggest complaint. While I liked how it tied in elements from the previous 2, there were SO many flashbacks and back peddling exposition it got cumbersome and lost a lot of momentum.

Ann Hathaway did a decent job. I wanted to hate her and I didn't.

[spoilers]

Bane's back story and the whole Batman rehab sequence was trite, predictable, and, at times, an utter drag. ZZZZZZZzzzzz.

How did the cops trapped under ground for three months not only NOT have beards, but also not have severe muscle atrophy, rickets, and a host of other diseases? The cops should have been an army of gaunt, pale, and barely able to walk zombies. The theater I was in had terrible THX sound and the audio peaked A LOT. I could not understand a lot of what Bane was saying. Maybe they explained the underground cops thing and I did not hear it.

When Catwoman kissed Batman before he flew away with the bomb at the end, there were audible laughs and groans in the theater. "here here!" I said aloud. Sometimes me and the hipsters see eye to eye.

It was nice seeing the Steelers and Heinz Field get blown up. Cept for Hines Ward managing to out run the blast . That bastard would live if it happened for real too. That cat always lands on his feet.

Ward getting offed would have made the movie.

Batgirl was a joke, dude.

Also love how the Batcopter can withstand direct atomic blasts.  They literally nuked the fridge.

First off, you do realize that Batgirl was not in the movie, right?

Secondly, who said the Batcopter survived the blast?   After the explosion it was learned that Bruce Wayne had fixed the autopilot on the batcopter... so I took that to mean Batman ejected well before the explosion.

Went to see it friday, we don't get out very often(2 young kids).  But we dropped them off at their grandparents and went.  60 min in, power went out and generators kicked in.  A lot of eyes were at the emergency exits.
Wasn't raining going in, but a huge storm went through ripping up trees.

Seemed ok up to that point, hope to get back and see the rest.

Thought it was ok.  Definitely a lot worse than Dark Knight.  The chase scene was pretty dumb.  Catwoman did all the work and Batman just flew around being dumb.  Speaking of which the heli was just an easy escape/easy way to end the movie.  Figured that out immediately, especially when they mentioned the autopilot.

You didn't miss much Agent Colson dies when he gives Loki the business.  Samuel "Snakes on a MF Plane" Johnson throws some bloody cards.  After that the Hulk kicks ass and everybody else runs around.
