front end comparisons?
« on: October 05, 2003, 11:19:29 pm »
I'm putting a cabinet together and although I like the look of mamewah, I'm having problems with it so if I can't get them fixed I'll have to move on to something else.
Can you guys point me to a review/comparison of different front ends for use on an arcade cabinet (i.e. I don't want the windows-menu look).
Also, what are the advantages of using DOS vs Windows vs Linux? I'm building my cabinet using a lowly PII-300 and I'm not sure if there are significant gains betweem all of them. I tried a few DOS front-ends but I can't seem to get sound and my USB trackball to work under DOS, so my choice is currently Win98 running mamepp.exe and mamewah for a front end.

Well, frontends are personal preference sort of things.  It's more of a try them out thing.

You won't get USB working on DOS, at least easily.

Linux doesn't have much for FE's.  Just Lemon Launcher which is like Game Launcher and ADvance Menu which you can try on windows too.  Lilwolf's JFront theoretically will work on linux qas it is java.

My 333 mhz cabinet uses Windows 98 and advancemenu (Windows version). It set up quickly and without issue.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.
