Help with TV after removing case
« on: July 08, 2012, 07:47:15 pm »
OK the very last step of my build.  I know NOTHING about monitors.  I have been testing everything on a 27" RCA TV that I have been planning on putting into my cab.  Everything has worked fine.  So it was time to remove the case of the TV and move the TV monitor and the board into the cab.  Removed the screws and unplugged the speaker cables and the monitor came out fine.  Put the TV into the cab making sure that nothing gets touched or unplugged.  Plugged everything back in.  TV turns on and nothing on the screen.   Can't see anything to change inputs, screen is blank.  No picture.  What am I missing.  Did I need to do something before removing it from the case?  I did no other steps than listed?  Did I mess something up?   :dunno

What type of chassis are you using for the TV CRT? Guessing it's a 19" tube?

I'm not using any chassis.  I just took the 27" TV out of the plastic RCA chassis and installed in into the game cab.   I removed the old monitor that had 4 screws in the corners of the screen and the TV had 4 screw holes in the same place.   I'm not sure I understand...sorry.

So you have a CRT just sitting in your cabinet and no chassis to drive the CRT ???
Your going to need some sort of chassis to tell your tube what to do. Make sure the chassis you get is the right kind for your yoke.

First thank you so much for your help.

So if I understand, the TV and connected board MUST be in some sort of Chassis in order to work?  Is this because of a grounding issue?  It is a 27" tube TV.   So yes to answer your question, I did just remove the plastic chassis from the TV and installed the CRT and the board into the game cab.  So do I need to put the TV back into the plastic case and cut the case to fit if I can?  Also, for my own understanding what does the plastic housing do that makes it monitor work?

No, the technical term "chassis", in CRT arcade monitors, refers to the circuit board controlling the tube.

If you decased your TV and kept the board + connections, you're good to go.

I suspect you missed a cable when reconnecting everything.

Oh crap, I was really getting confused?!!??  OK so it should work if I just take the TV + board out of the case/housing of the TV like I did and mount it into the game cab?  Thanks for clarifying.

Well you can it depends on what route your going to take. Use the tv tube and the original tv chassis. Or use the tv tube and buy a arcade chassis and hook it up like that. What is your plan? MAME or original arcade PCB?

Shipping something from the U.S. to Canada for repair/exchange?  Please use USPS to avoid (additional?/excessive?) shipping charges.  PM me if you have any questions.

Yes I brought everything over.  It turns on but I get nothing on the screen.  If I hit the change input button or volume button, I don't get any graphics on the screen.   I will post a photo here in a few minutes.

Everything was working fine and tested OK.  Hookup via S-Video.  I check all of the plugs and everything looks OK.   :banghead:

Are you sure you hooked up the ground strap that goes around the tube as well? That could cause some problems. Not really seeing anything wrong with the pictures but they are a little hard to see.

Maybe you can make a little checklist of everything you hooked up. I'm very familiar with tv's and may notice something you could have missed.
Also I'm a little curious on how you took everything apart as well.

Does the tube turn on? You said the TV turns on, but what turns on exactly? I guess you can see some LED turning on but do you feel electrostatic on the surface of the tube when turning on?

It may also turn on in standby mode, I think I had this case once. You may have to plug it off when running, then turn it on again, to "reset" standby mode. I can't remember the exact maneuver, you should also try the remote to wake it up.

OK got a new TV today.  See if this one works better.  So I just need to be careful with the grounding strap.  Here goes nothing....
