Connecting PS2 To Hantarex Polo 33" Monitor
« on: July 07, 2012, 10:08:40 pm »
I tried searching but have came up empty handed, I apologize if this is a common question.  Due to the lack of information I've been able to find.  I have come to the conclusion, it is either incredibly easy, or just impossible.

I have a Tekken 3 33" showcase cab.  I would like to run a PS2 in it.  How do I convert the video signal from the PS2 to 15hz RGB.  If there is a how to, please point me in the right direction.  Thanks for all input.

The common way is to hack up a PS2 SCART cable.  You can use an LM1881 (the app circuit in the datasheet works fine) to strip composite sync off the CVBS wire (usually yellow).  You can then set the PS2 component output to RGB in the shell menus (changed from the default of YPbPr) and hook the outputs straight up to the monitor's RGB inputs.  You can power the LM1881 circuit from the 5V output of the PS2 (it's usually a brown wire, IIRC, but check).

You can also hack up a standard set of component cables the same way.  Sync is also available on the green video signal.  You'll need 5V from somewhere.

The signal levels are only 0.7Vpp broadcast/PC standard, while arcade monitors expect much higher (~3Vpp).  You may need a video amp, or you may be able to just crank the contrast control up a fair bit.

http://www.uniarcade.com/video_converters/ypbpr_to_rgb_converter.htm

This item looks much easier to install than the scart/ lm1881 hack, I'm assuming it is just plug and play.  Other than ease of installation is there a quality/performance difference?

Also, how do I tap into the audio?  The volume control is on the PCB board.

I apologize for all the noob Q's.  Thanks for the help so far it is appreciated.

Well, if you want 100% plug and play, then yeah, that converter should work.  It's totally unnecessary in terms of function, but it'll work.  You could use it on other consoles, too.  My only concern would be that the conversion appears to be digital.  It may lag.  It's also almost guaranteed to use 4:2:2, which results in a (normally unnoticed) blurring of the color (but not brightness) information.

Beware the cost of Uniarcade.  Paying them is quite a hassle (you can either wire them money or use Western Union - neither is free), and shipping is high since it's coming from China.  Decent folks otherwise, though.  Quality is highly variable on some products.  They also messed up one of my orders and would not correct it, leaving me with about $100 worth of useless merchandise.

Thanks for the input, I would rather use a tried and true method than use something that "might" work "okay."  The goal is for it to work properly, no lag and looks great.  Cost and work are secondary, I would rather put in the extra wiring work or purchase the more expensive component if it is going to work better.

As a heads up I was going to use hacked controllers (probably purchase from Haruman) for the encoding.  Wire up to the control panel using molex connectors, so I could "quick disconnect" to switch from jamma to the PS2.  I was going to do the same molex connector "quick disconnect" idea at the output of the jamma harness that goes to the video signal.

After doing a bit more research, I found this monitor/speaker adapter from Ultrimarc

You have to scroll down a little

Also this Jpac adapter

Does anyone have feedback on these items.

Thanks again for the help

+1 on what MonMotha said.

I've connected ps2 to my old driving cab monitor using this. Dead simple to make and super cheap. Worked great.

oh totally forgot about ultimarc. u should get that instead.

I used the xbox version with an arcade monitor before and it looked great. didn't notice any lag. CRT monitors aren't supposed to lag either way.
