I honestly thought there was a good chance I was in a tornado. The wind was amazing and lightning all around about every quarter second. Also a tree fell on my car, lol. I didn't know that till it was all over, though.

Sorry to hear that, shmokes. That's horrible! Will your insurance cover the damage?

I'm being melodramatic about the tree. It looked like the tree nailed it, but when I got down it turned out the trunk of the tree was laying down next to my car and it was just the top bushy part laying across my hood. Minor scratches on my fender. Not remotely worth an insurance claim.

Many others in my parking lot were not so lucky. I took a bunch of pics. I'll post later when I get better access to the internet.

Power's out, though, prob for at least the next few days. Sucks. It's like 105 degrees.

That sucks Shmokes.  Sorry to hear that your car got damaged.  I hope your power comes back on soon.

Thanks for the sentiments. It's definitely way too hot. But not, like, dangerously so or anything. So I'm fine. And my wife and daughter totally skipped it. They left Tuesday to Idaho to visit parents/grandparents and don't come back for a couple more days. So I can't really complain. It's just a bit warm. And my god, you should have seen that storm . . . 

Still . . . some cool weather would not be unwelcome. Repairs have still not even begun where I live. A huge tree down in the road, requiring cars to drive up on a lawn to get around it, is still there. Power lines are still laying in the road where they were the night of the storm. There's just too much damage in the city to address everything.

we took a night time pill each at 7:30 pm and awoke at 4:00 am and missed the whole thing.

Pretty much all of WV and half of VA and OH were hit pretty bad.  We didn't have any real damage to our property BUT we just now got power.  We've been without it for 5 days, in 90+ degree heat.  Some of the state won't even have any until sunday or later. 

Our area had more downed trees and snapped power poles than you can count.  Thankfully not a whole lot of damage to actual homes or anything.  I was beginning to give up hope in regards to getting any power until Sunday, because we hadn't even seen a power truck until this morning.... they just hadn't shown up yet.  To my amazment they had our power on by 6:30 this evening!  So they fixed 15 downed poles, two broken transformers, a downed transmission line that had to be reached by helicopter, and more downed lines than you can count in under a day. Cable and telephone too! Those guys are ---fracking--- rock stars. 

And just to give people a sense of scope in regards to the damage, our little town, with the damage mentioned above, was considered "minimal".

That kind of damage happend 2 winters ago here.
power crews were from all states here. The crew in my back yard was from 2 states away.

I wish I was there with all my set up for logging. look at all the down trees ready to season for lumber and fire wood.

I have allways gotten way to up set with the news when the news person can stare into the camera and say how much per mile it would be to put the cables under ground!

Maybe some what close if only say cable television only but we have electrick and phone to go in the ground also.
so the cost is split up 3 ways. 1st eclectic goes above sewer ,the water, & the gas, then electrick, then, Phone line then cable, cable being 3 feet deep.

We had yet another storm, and our power was out yet again today!  It just came on a couple of hours ago. 

I'm telling ya... global climate change is a ---smurfette---.  The last time we had consistent 70+ mph winds in WV was... well... never!

Yup, I live in AZ, have since 2007.  No above ground lines where I'm at, and have not had an outage since I moved here.  (Knock on wood.)

Considering you can still walk around in 70 winds, that's fairly pathetic.

Winds only reached 80 here last Friday. I'll try and post some pictures tomorrow of the effect those extra 10 mph have on trees.

Ice becomes ultra valuable and then you learn to cook shelf stable food.

I'd still lean for indoor plumbing over electricity.

It may be neither here nor there, at least as far as staying alive goes. Some areas around here were on water restrictions because the power outages affected some of the water treatment plants. So if the plumbing is working, but it's delivering poisonous water, it's of limited use. At least with plumbing you can dispose of human waste, I suppose. And if you have a gas stove or another means of creating cooking fires you can boil water to make it potable.

Generally speaking, though, I think I'd tend to agree. If I have to choose, I'll probably keep the water running over the electricity.

I keep a couple jugs of water - one for cleaning, one for drinking (yes, it's filtered) - for small emergencies. I can always pee in the yard (hell, now that I have property, more than half the time I'm going outside to pee on my oak tree! Good lovin!), and crap in a pot and dig a hole in the yard. Of course, I have a killer environment to chill in, and I have books I can read, if there's a blackout. But in the summer, I'd go for electricity.

Another perk of living alone is that in either case, you don't have to worry about others pissing and moaning, or/and screwing up the order of things. Sweet jesus.

I've lived without both for brief periods of time (say a week or so) and have to say running water by far was the bigger deal.  Can't wash clothes, flush toilets, take showers, drink anything etc etc.  You can only loot the neighbor's swimming pool for so long.  My wife lived on a boat for a couple of years and concurs.

 

As I said, I keep a ration of water for both things. If I felt I needed more on hand, I'd have twenty gallons. I know how to use water in sparse circumstances. So, in the summer, I'd still have a fair bit of lifestyle comfort if I had electricity but no running water. If I were...somehow....unimaginably....shacked up with other people, I'd probably skim, hoard, and stow some things in case of emergency and imminent idiocy.

Been there too.  Water is by faaaaaaaaar the harder item to live without.  You can do nearly anything truly necessary to live without electricity, in one manner or other, that you can with it.  There are a ton of things that absolutely require water.  Like, for starters, not dying of dehydration.
