mameuifx cant assign mouse buttons as player 1

My trackball on my cab is also a mouse, and 3 buttons are designated as mouse buttons, unfortunately either latest version of mameuifx or maybe me reinstalling windows has disabled being able to use those buttons as regular player 1 buttons and now when I try to assign them no matter how many times I click on the mouse button it will not register in the game (and yes I used TAB in game). Anyone knows of a solution?
