I have at last made a start
« on: October 03, 2003, 04:19:30 pm »
Well, I first discovered MAME back in 1997 and now 6 years later I have at last started my project.
Better late than never I guess !! Link is below.

Cool wings up top...
Look out, it's about to take off!!! ::) :P ::) :P
(I know you're just checking the level across the top)

Then again, I don't know what I would do if my garage was that clean/cleared out!
I'd have so many projects going I wouldn't have a clean garage any more...

Hm...
Interesting conundrum...

Looks good by the way...  :D

<edit>
um....
Is your keyboard tray gonna stick out far enough past the Control Panel when you get it on there? Just a thought...

<edit... again...>
Never mind...
I just looked @ Lusids plans & the CP doesn't stick out as far as I thought it did...

Yes, your right. It's just a piece of plywood lying across the top with a level on it  ;)

Niiice.. plywood is definitely underrated, good call.. what is the difference from Lusid's?  Just shorter on the bottom?

The difference between mine and Lusid's is that I have cut out's on the bottom half front and back, whereas on his it goes straight down.

How come everybody makes those cabinets that poke in at the back? What exactly is the function of that? It seems to make construction a lot more complicated.

It seems to have to do with getting your cabinet flush against the wall and not having to leave space for your power cord to stick out (it would be in the recessed area).

My Atari System I cabinet is like that.  Haven't really had any other dedicateds like that, though.  Kind of sucks, though, that on the System I cabs the jut is boarded in on the inside, but not sealed off.. perfect for mice and spider nests :o

I will be moving in the spring of next year. So I won't be doing anything with the garage.
But in my new home that is being built, I'm going to have a games room in the basement  ;D

That looks great.  I like the shape and the wood.  What are you doing with the end grain of the plywood?  I just decided last night to use an edge banding instead of black t-molding on my maple plywood cab.

Yes, I am also using Real Wood Edging (Red Oak 3/4"), the pre-glued iron on kind.

How does that edging seem to hold up?  Are there any spots that don't bond well?

I almost got the contact cement edging because I am worried about the bonding of the heat activated cement (I have to call it that, because I don't want to think that I am building any quality stuff with "Iron on Wood"... lol).

I've considered everything from black t-molding (easiest) to 1x lumber planed down to the thickness and joined to the ends of the plywood (most time consuming).  I've settled on the edge banding but now I need assurance of the _type_ of edge banding.

I've bought it, but have not put it on yet. I will let you know how it works out.
I also considered Black T-Molding, but in the end decided that a total wood look would be better.

I have done a little more work. Mostly on the control panel, as it has been to damn cold to work in the garage this winter !!

I think it makes the cabinet look a bit more 'svelte'  and commercial.  YMMV.

I used the "iron on wood" on my minicade and it held to some pretty tight corners (1/2" radius)--its been 2 weeks of moving it around and its still sticking.

I can't seem to access your site either--very strange, just the first page comes up with links to mame.net and here--no pics

That's strange, it seems to be ok here.
Is anyone else having problems with the website ?

How did you mount that trackball?  Nothing but the ball visible from the top.  That is nice on a wooden panel!

Awesome wiring job! 8) A true sign of someone realy caring about something...
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

crashwg: Thankyou for the kind words.

GadgetGeek: I glued it in place with a very strong epoxy. The other thing I did was remove the self tapping screws that hold the two half's together as I would not have been able to get to them once the trackball was mounted and replaced them with nuts and bolts. This way I can still remove the bottom half of the trackball house if I need to do maintenance.

Good ideas on the trackball and amazing job on the wiring.  I saw a thread the other day where you can get a 3" wooden juggling ball that might work as the trackball if you wanted to keep the wooden theme going.

GadgetGeek: I saw the thread on the 3" wooden juggling ball also, but I don't think it would be heavy enough ?
Plus I have just fitted a 12 volt LED cluster underneath the trackball and it looks awesome  ;D
