Monitor to 7 prong iso transformer???
« on: June 17, 2012, 08:33:42 am »
Actually have a few questions, all involve power setup though.

I have a 25" Hantarex MTC9000 with an iso transformer that has 5 prongs on the bottom? I imagine the 0V is the neutral line, but then for the hot line, which one do I use (105V, 115V, 125V, E)? Top prongs are 0V and 115V(1 amp).

Then from the top prongs to the monitor, I was told monitors were DC current, so it didn't matter which wire went to which, which doesn't make sense to me, but both power lines into the molex are black, so how should I identify which to plug into 0V?

Last one involves PSU. This is going into a mame cab, so a PSU should not be necessary unless there is a pcb in the cab, right? PSU shouldn't power anything else? I put it in there as I was reading stories somewhere that if there isn't a load, any load, on the psu when the monitor fires up, it can fry the monitor? Read that in several places...sounded legit?

Thanks in advance!!

is this a US spec mtc9000?
if so it's a 2 wire connection and you can use 115-128vac from the transformer,I would use 125vac in your case
ac currect does not matter which way round the neutral or live is but I have always matched the live to the fuse line

you will not cause any damage powering a monitor without a signal

monitors are AC not DC

and yes match the "live" often black wire some European made cords use brown - to the fuse. (you better have a fuse) if not GET ONE, it's a few bucks and will keep you from your house burning down or catching a case of dead. make sure you also ground everything. monitor frame/transformer case/green wire from your power cord. other metal parts too. nothing sucks more than something going kaput and having 100 volts charging a metal control panel and getting zapped dead the second you touch it.

the 0v is "neutral" often white in color, some European made cords use blue.

modern PSU have an internal resistor that keeps a small load on the supply. no-load is not really an issue now-a-days.

Some monitors could potentially be ruined by operating them with no signal (the lack of a timing signal causes the monitor to scan the screen several times faster than designed)...again modern electronics employ a safeguard to keep the monitor safe. this particular monitor I don't know. I would think it's fine since it's relatively recent. You are more likey to kill the monitor by feeding it a signal it's incapable of displaying. This forces the monitor to try and scan the monitor to scan faster than designed.

be sure to find out the display capabilities of the monitor and stick to those.

mtc9000 are 15khz only
quite rare to see a 25" MTC9000 as most were 14-20",mtc9110 tended to be 25-29" chassis

if it is indeed a 25" chassis then i would expect to see a fan mounted above the flyback transformer
