I'll wait for the summary.  Not wasting hours of my life to watch an arbitrary list that I may not even agree with.

While I like the games in their list for the most part, the order is a little disturbing for me.  Castlevania:Symphony of the Night and Zelda:Link to the past are neck and neck for the top spot on my list. Galaga at 92? for shame. Super Mario #1 (and Ahead of Mario 3?) just doesnt compute.

I mean Madden 2005 even being on any top list other than "top madden games" is a travesty.

Yeah it's pretty odd....

I caught the last 15 minutes (which is all you need to see anyway).

The list wasn't entirely out of left field, but it had a lot of stuff that didn't make any sense.

Super Mario Bros. made #1, at least they got that right.

Asteroids made it to the top 5.... it was the only classic to make it to the top 10... no pacman, no pong... but asteroids?  Mind you I'm a big fan of the game, but even I understand that it was kind of a one hit wonder... no real lasting value to "normal" players.

There were a lot of inconsistences in their logic.  For example, Zelda LTTP made it in the top 5, while the original Zelda only made the top 10.  Their argument was that it built on the original and thus is the better version, which I can see.  On the other hand SMB 3 was only in the top 10 while the original SMB made #1... they even go so far in the reviews to say the SMB 3 is the pan-ultimate version of Mario.  So why is it ranked lower?  Well they said that SMB single handedly changed the home console industry, which again, I agree with, BUT so did the original Zelda, not LTTP.

Also BioShock was in the top 10.  Why?  I get it, the game had a good story, but it barely has any age on it and it's just another fps.  Portal on the other hand, which was groundbreaking to the genre, didn't place nearly as high afaik.

There were a lot like that.  In typical g4 fashion, games that were released last tuesday were given as high regard as games that are 20 years old or started a multi-million dollar franchise.  I don't agree with that line of thought.  It isn't that newer games aren't as good, but rather they are newer, and thus haven't been proven to stand the test of time.

They did a pretty good job though... stuff like Golden Eye ranked highly as did stuff like Ms. Pacman.

  • Gotta have blue hair.
Grand Theft Auto III made the list, but Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is way better.  Everything about Vice City blows away GTAIII.

I also can't believe that Twisted Metal II isn't on there, though I guess the list is kind of short.  Twisted Metal II is one of the greatest games ever released for the original Playstation.

I would put Portal in the top 10.  There is NOTHING like portal.  NOTHING.

What the hell is "Shadow of the Colossus"?  It's in the top 10 and I've never even heard of it.

You can always tell when people in their 20's put a historical list together... You wind up with two month old crap that will be forgotten in 5 years like "Words With Friends" in the top 100, and a game like Space Invaders which basically ignited the Golden Age at number 40.

That list is not good. The #1 was right but like others here said there need to be more of the really big classic games, its just new stuff here.

At least Galaga got on the list, but you think it would have been higher up due to the popularity it got from being shown in The Avengers.  ;)

Wow, NFL 2k5 is still the best football game of all time, and yet Madden 2005 is in the top 25??
2k5 destroyed it every which way possible, including price ($20 to $50). Unbelievable.

I have words with friends, its ---smurfing--- PICTIONARY online, and not that great. I can think of a myriad of other games that could be on the list and I dont really see the point of Halo 1 and 3 being on the list. Wii Sports, top 100 of all time? Maybe for grandparents.

Symphony of the night is EASILY a top 10 game, and number one in my heart, lol.

They were close on some, but I know it comes down to preference. I liked MegaManX much more than MegaMan II (not to mention how freeeeeekin hard MMII was) , NBA Jam TE over NBA Jam,  Final Fantasy 3 (aka 6) over FF7, etc

I just didnt see how they got their rankings, sometimes they cite gameplay, story, or graphics and other times its sales figures and genre impact. Super Mario Bros is a great game, but if youre counting sales for a pack in game, thats gonna skew the numbers a bit dontcha think?

Like I said I dont HATE the list, I just think they got 75% of it in the wrong order.

Howard: I agree with most of what you typed. But is MM really on the same engine as DOTT? They look much different graphically. The way it's played is the same though.

MM

DOTT

Makenko: SOTN is also one of my top 10. I even had one of the songs as a ringtone. heh
Easily one of my favorite PS1 games.

But overall I agree with PBJ on the fact that these lists should never be taken too serious. I find lists entertaining but it's just someone's opinion in the end. It means nothing. Some of the games are in odd order for sure. But I suppose it depends on the logic behind the list. Some lists are based on how popular the game was, some are based on impact, and some based on quality. It's still just someone's opinion though.

I agree with the majority of them having a place on the list though. Aside from the majority of the sports games I did not find myself once thinking "Why did this make the list?"

Shadow of Colossus made the list because it really pushed the PS2 to its limits graphically I would guess.

I meant scrabble, was thinking of "Draw something" for some reason. point still stands, its still just scrabble online, you and the internet vs your friend and the internet and still not that great. I guess the upside is you dont have to clean up the little wooden blocks or worry about losing them.

Ah yes... the "I don't like it so it no one else should either" argument.

no its the "we ripped off a classic board game" argument. I really liked scrabble as a kid, it'd be a top 100 board game of all time for sure.  Top 100 video game? not so much. I'd rather play the hidden Galaxian/Galaga style game in MK3/UMK3

Yep, the list does have some sequel-itis goin' on. Some I agree with, Mega Man II, Civilization II. Since their are not being original game purists, I am surprised that a few originals, and not their superior sequels got on. I probably clocked less than 5 hours of Mortal Kombat after MKII came out. Same thing with Tecmo Bowl. Tecmo Super Bowl still gets played all the time by me.

I have never played BioShock. Is it's place as the 3rd best game of all time justifiable?

It's a really beautiful game and definitely worth playing if you haven't, but I doubt you'd find many people who would put it in the top 10.

There needs to be a very high level or replay value for a game to be on a list like this.  I played Bioshock once through and no desire to again.  I think it even became a chore to finish.  "Hacking" the machines became super annoying and I played it through most of it using the same tactic, something like freeze and smash with a wrench.

All I can figure with Bioshock is that when it came out the publisher gave away a lot of free t-shirts to reviewers or something... or maybe the reviewers are all 17 and just read Atlas Shrugged and are going through their ---meecrob--- objectivist phase?  I was really disappointed in it but came to it after years of hype.

Agreed.... the inclusion of MK and not MK II or UMK3 kind of left me scratching my head.  I mean I'm a hardcore MK fan, but even I realize that MK1 is to MKII what SF1 was to SFII..... basically once the sequel came out the original was dead, the franchise was radically different, and the popularity exploded.

I finally broke down and played Bioshock a few years ago after ironically, X-Play kept gushing about it constantly.  I've gotta say... I wasn't impressed.  The atmostphere was impressive, but that's about it.  And nobody plays a game just for the background art.  The best way to describe it is this:

Remember when Doom 3 came out?  Half of the people out there loved it because it looked so nice, but the other half hated it because the poor gameplay and design choices ruined all the fun.  Imagine if they had remade Hexen instead.... now add a failed dutopian setting.... that's Bioshock.

I guess if you are into that sort of thing it's a pretty good game, but it's nowhere as original as everybody claims it is nor should it have hit the top 50, much less the top 10.

SMB was #1 due to it's impact on the game industry.  It's about the only ranking on their list I agree with.

The NES saved the gaming industry and in terms of launch titles, SMB was the game to get.  If you look at the NES's original 18 release titles that came out in the first year, I'll think you'll agree that it didn't get those sales numbers pushing Hogan's Alley and Donkey Kong Jr. Math. ;)  You can't deny it's staying power either.  The New Super Mario Series is selling like hot-cakes, and even the VC release of SMB sold millions.

SMB is literally why I got into gaming.  I played vs SMB at the local Dairy Queen when I was a kid.  After wasting 10 bucks in quarters in a sitting, my folks decided it might just be cheaper to get me a NES.

It wasn't necessarily a pack-in game either.  It was a year or two later, but in it's original release about all you could find was the deluxe set, which came with gyromite/duckhunt.  SMB actually came out a few months after the NES release.

I'll wait for the summary.  Not wasting hours of my life to watch an arbitrary list that I may not even agree with.

I used to write for a, now defunct, online comedy type magazine called the phat phree. We loved lists. They were easy, required no skill, and got more clicks because they would ALWAYS spur debate.  Lists are a lazy cure all for actually having something to produce something worthwhile. There's a reason Comso and other magazines like that are filled with lists.

It's meaningless, totally subjective, and baiting.

That being said.. Ocarina of time should have been above Link to the past.  ;)

Geeze. All those "magazines" are the same. If you don't have Mario or Zelda tattooed on your butt, you won't be employed. 3 Zelda's in the top 10 (well 11), and 6 Nintendo games common. That shows you are a stinking Nintendo Pederast community. Even the number one is weird. Who knows Super Mario Brothers? Well most fanatics know, but walk into a average shopping mall and ask the average McDonalds burger eating guy/lady. They know Mario, but as the driver of one of the Karts, not as platform gay.
But they definitely DON'T KNOW SMB!
Top 3 should be in the Tetris, Pac-Man, Angrybirds, Wordfeud section, no matter how much we gaming fans hate this crap (OK, Pac-Man is OK for everyone, so that is no.1, period!)

And if you don't include Katamari, Monkey Island, Sim City X, Second Life and FGS PAC-MAN you miss some serious game-changers and you prove you don't know ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- about Gaming History.

Totally agree with jimfath BTW. Lists are something for lady-mags.

Not sure I agree. I would say most people alive today know EXACTLY who Mario is. Or can at least recognize the character if shown a picture. And most people would know SMB if shown a screenshot.

That's what I say too. But they know him from:
1- Super Mario Kart
2- Mario Kart 64
3- Mario Kart DS
4- Mario Kart Wii
5- Super Mario Galaxy
They don't know him from SMB

Or to make it visual. For people Mario is this:

For the very selective group of geeks and game lovers, Mario is mostly this:

Same With Donkey Kong.
He is first of all the ape of Mario Kart (to the average (wo)man in the street)
AKA the stupid APE-clown with tie:

To us geeks (less than 1% of the world population), Donkey Kong is this:

And being the greatest Video Game Gay, has nothing to do with what the greatest ever Video Game is.

Hmm...not sure I agree still. I think that most people know SMB as a game. unless they are 80 years old and above or under 10.
I am judging strictly on the people in my area. Everyone knows SMB.

You couldn't avoid getting SMB if you had an NES.  That went a long way toward it becoming the game that defined the NES.

I DVR'd and ended up watching most of the list...  While I don't necessarily agree with all of their picks, it opened my eyes to some games that I wasn't familiar with and may now end up playing.   It also reminded me of some games that I hadn't played or thought about in years and now want to play again.

Nerd rage over this list cracks me up.
