going rate for NTSC dreamcasts?
« on: June 10, 2012, 05:57:35 am »

DCs in Australia are pricey. Thought I'd have a look at American ones. With the view of either doing something with the 240V DC power supply I have, or a stepdown transformer. But US DCs on ebay don't seem as cheap as I remember. And what with the freight, and possibly buying a stepdown tansformer, it's not looking so rosy.

So what would my North American brethren be willing to shell out for a working DC, with controller and leads?

I paid $20 years ago.  I just saw some bundles for that price on eBay before shipping.  Right now I don't need another, but $50 after shipping, for a decent bundle, dosen't seem unreasonable.

Mr. _galaga it might be best to look into these sellers amazon market for one that would ship to you.  Even if they don't someone (preferably from California) could buy it and then reship to you.

Are you not on PAL?

Heh, which is funny, because at one point Gamestop couldn't throw them at you fast enough for a couple bucks each.

I think they had a promotion for three free games when you buy a DC or a free DC when you buy three games when I got mine from them.  Of course the selection of those freebies was very meh  (best was soul calibur, worst was sonic shuffle, and the other chuchu rocket).

Perhaps to offset the cost you could smuggle a banned game inside the DC to resell.

Is there a difference between UK Pal and Australia Pal as far as consoles go?

I gave mine away.  Cute system but it really got left in the dust quick.

:duckhunt

PAL is the same, UK, Europe or Australia. I was considering an American one because of the price. Pretty much all tvs now play any signal. Even the oldest of my CRTs (admittedly only maybe ten years old, but still). So if the price was right, I'd consider an American one. The bonus would be the games will tend to be cheaper too. Yeah, I can burn some, but lately I've been reading that burnt disks could be putting more wear on the hardware, if not the laser, then the drive motors...

Just how pricey is a DC in Oz ? and what do used DC games go for in OZ ?

I imagine they are higher priced than the USA for sure, last time I was in OZ I loved going into EB game stores or JB Hi-fi as a joke to see the outrageous prices on new and used games. A game I could buy for $5 or $6 USD was $50 AUS, crazy.

Last time I checked the price of a DC was a few years back, but they were still close to $20-$30max USD price range.

Dreamcast games have always been free, thats why the system failed :)

Mars Matrix, its the reason I still have mine hooked up.  Power Stone still gets some play, Street Fighter Alpha 3 was a fantastic port, ummmm... Grandia, Skys of Arcadia,  definitely had the best port of MvC2 (not including the recently released 360 version)

+ there's nothing quite like playing house of the dead II on a dreamcast with one of these guns below: (these superb madcatz lightguns have auto-reload and auto-fire modes (no more sore trigger-finger).. grab one on ebay while u still can..... ;))

ps. once you complete hotd2 and get the game ending, you can change the blood colour from GREEN to RED... for all future games... >:D

EDIT: prob should mention that u need an old style TV for the lightgun to work, not an LCD, LED, PLASMA, etc

Can't you just patch the ISOs to display in any region that you want anyway?  Looks like the region mod is just a jumper wire and firmware flash anyway.  Don't be lazy, danny.

I don't care about modding the DC as I'm happy with whatever region I end up with. I don't feel the need to play every Japanese game never released in the West for instance. My friend has a PAL and we both enjoy that. NTSC would be nice because every game is guaranteed to be 60HZ, whereas only some PAL games have that option. Basically I don't care which, just gotta be cheap  ;D

Gavkiwi, broken DC's go for over $50 usually  : :badmood::

I missed out on a crappy looking one that was spray painted black a while back but still worked. I think it went for $20. I have a broken DC with a nice looking case, so you can imagine I was kicking myself...

yeah they really shot themselves in the foot when they didnt release their brand lightgun instead relying on madcatz to offer one.  Fortunately the xbox and wii versions are decent if you cant get ahold of dc guns.
