Help! IPAC PS/2 and Windows XP Keyboard Problem

Hopefully somebody can help me with this problem since my net search came up empty.

I'm using an IPAC (PS/2) with a keyboard passthrough.  It was working without issue in Windows 98.  I installed Win XP and now the keyboard/IPAC won't work.  It shows up in Device Manager as 102-key PS/2 Keyboard with the little yellow error icon and the message "Cannot Start Device (Code 10)".

Here's more info:
- keyboard works during BIOS setup but does not work once XP loads
- while WinXP is booting, the 3 LEDS flash on the keyboard then go out
- if I remove the IPAC and go straight into the computer, the keyboard works in Windows XP
- I tried uninstall/reinstall the device in WinXP - it didn't work.

Did you upgrade the WIN98, or install XP from scratch?  If an upgrade, you might want to install XP on a fresh hard drive.

Have you tried unplugging it (while it is booted into XP) and then plugging it in again?

Does the keyboard work when plugged into the Ipac, or is the Ipac blocking it?

One other option I can think of...

Boot up into XP, but unplug the Ipac as soon as the computer detects it.  Leave it unplugged, and then go into device manager and remove the keyboard device.

Next, shut down the computer, and plug the Ipac back in.  Turn it on, and try and let XP detect it again.

Other than that, you might want to email Andy at Ultimarc and see if he has any ideas....

Thanks for the input.  To answer a couple of questions:

It was a clean install of XP, but the install was done with just a keyboard connected, not the IPAC.

If I plug the keyboard into the PS/2 port, it works fine.  When I plug in the IPAC, the IPAC doesn't work (nor does a keyboard plugged into the IPAC passthrough).  I tried all manor of removing, plugging in, uninstalling drivers, etc. all with no luck.

I have ordered a PS/2 --> USB converter to see if that helps.  If not, I'll try a fresh install of XP using a keyboard connected through the IPAC (if it lets me) and see if that does the trick.

If anyone has any other ideas, I'd appreciate them.

Is the jumper set to "USB" ?

Andy - thanks for the offer of help, but I think I have found a workaround.  The jumper was not set to USB.

Just a quick update, I purchased one of those adapters to connect PS/2 mice and keyboards to a USB port.  I'm typing on the arcade cab as we speak, so that seems to solve the problem.   Well worth my 12 bucks to not have to track down an elusive software incompatibility.

Well, it didn't work quite as well as expected.  I was able to use the keyboard and IPAC controls plugged in through the USB convertor, however I couldn't play very many games.  Specifically, in games like 1942, when I held the joystick left, it would move a little bit left and then stop.  I don't think it was sending the continuous keypress needed to enable smooth movement.  It works fine for games like Ms. Pac Man that just need a change in direction.

So, I'm still looking for a solution.....

Just wanted to follow up on my progress.

After a couple of emails to Andy at Ultimarc, he offered to send me a new chip for my Ipac (at his expense).  I just got it today, swapped it in, and everything works fine now.

I'm having a problem with an ipac as well.  I have the ipac 4 ps/2 version, and windows xp ONLY recognizes the ipac if it is hooked up after windows has started.

also, the keyboard passthrough only works if no wires are connected to the ipac during startup, or if everything is connected after xp starts.

any ideas?
