My Second Cab: Time for a cocktail!
« on: October 01, 2003, 07:37:22 pm »
Just got my second cabinet project going: http://thegamecollector.tk/cocktail.html

What kind of controls I need for the classic cocktail friendly games and is there a list of what cocktail games are in mame?
Im going for an old computor in the P1 range so I wont  be playing any NeoGeo or CPS2 stuff only the oldies.

Check my page, any feedback would be great!

Glad to see you decided on vertical monitor.

I wouldn't bastardize it by adding flip out control panels and all sorts of other mess.

Basically just decide if you want each control panel to have an 8-way and 3 buttons, or a 4-way and two buttons. I also reccomend using the same control panels that are already on it.

Got two 4ways comming any day now that I thought of using, but there is no way those sticks are going to fit on that tiny controlbox its only 45mm deep and 65mm from base to edge.

And yeah the whole flipout control things is kind of overkill since im not going for anything but the classics, still I would be a cool thing to have  ;)

just curious...im guessing you have an upright cab, and if so, why would you or anybody make a cocktail?  dont take that the wrong way...i think its so cool to have a cocktail cab and any other cab for that matter, and great that you are doing it, im just trying to justify it for myself! ;D  what games will you put on it?  just games designed(well not designed, but games like pacman, galaga, donkey kong, etc.) for cocktail cabs.  im just trying to picture my upright cab with 400+ games, then making a cocktail cab, and having the same games?  is that what most people do?  thanks for any info.

oh and by the way, great looking cocktail cab!

I currently have 2 up and running Mame cabinets, with a several more in the works.

I DO NOT put the same games on them. The 112 games on my Artic Mini are not on my Amazing Maze. Battlezone and Bradley Trainer will come off the Amazing Maze as soon as I get my Battlezone Mame cabinet up. Once I put together my Space Firebird Mini, then all the vertical 8-way games are coming off my Amazing Maze as well.

Likewise, any other specialty cabinets I make (vertical spinner or vertical trackball is probably next) will have their games immediately removed from the game list on the Amazing Maze.

If you are just going for two cabinets, then the best second cabinet is vertical 4-way, either cocktail or upright (doesn't matter, almost all vertical 4-way games support cocktail mode).

If you are going the mega-multi cabinet route like I am, then the LAST one to do would probably be either horizontal spinner, or horizontal 4-way. Not a lot of games go that route.

Unfortunately to play EVERYTHING correctly with the correct orientation with no rotating monitors or machiness with excess controls, you need like 20 cabinets. And that isn't even counting those few games that mix controls (Tron, Snake Pit, etc). I may never support those titles.

When complete my Mame-Cade will have the following.

Horizontal with Streetfighter controls (already done).

Vertical with 4-way and 2 buttons (already done).

Battlezone cabinet (have cabinet, and all components needed except for the monitor overlay).

Vertical 8-way - (have cabinet and all components needed).

Other cabinets/panels I am considering (basically because I already have the controls).

Spinner, trackball, dual analog sticks (without buttons on them), single analog stick with buttons on it, positional gun, and top fire 8-way (have several styles of these). Probably won't ever do a driving cabinet or panel, I would rather just spend the cash to get a Roadblasters or Turbo cockpit, or an Outrun upright.

Yeah I would say im going the route of Paige here, got my upright 2 player with a basic fightersetup and I could just make a 4way classic controlpanel but I much rather have a second cab for those, hence the cocktail cab. (the fact that my upright uses a TV makes it kind of hard to rotate too, and I really want a cab with a vertical monitor)

Even my girlfriend fell in love with the little white and blue and im sure as hell going for it when I see an oppening  ;)

One thing I like about my cocktail cab is just the fact that your sitting across from each other, it just reminds me of playing games like that in bars when I was a little younger.

I think I built mine just to see if I could do it (and regain my kitchen!)

It's also great to taunt each other, plus its mint just being ablet to put your beer on the glass... ;D

<k-spiff imagines Smack turning all the lights down, putting on some romantic MP3s with a dynamic disco-ball visualization on the cocktail, setting a beer on top and zoning out on an amber-tinted lightshow>

Well, OK, maybe not.. might make a neat beer commercial, though :D
