Does this exist?
« on: May 06, 2012, 08:46:11 pm »
Hi all. I am using GameEx as a frontend and am running emulators for multiple systems. I have a fairly large LCD monitor running at 1920x1080. I have scanlines turned on in almost all of the emulators. But for most of them, the scanlines are really thick and aren't as subtle as I feel they should be. I think the issue is that on such a large monitor (46") running at the lower resolution that some of these old school emulators run, the thickness of the scanline tends to get exaggerated. Interestingly enough, I use a scanline filter with MAME that looks absolutely perfect on every game no matter what the resolution, as all MAME is doing is overlaying the graphic on top of the screen. So I'm wondering if there is any program that could take a .png file and overlay it on the screen while another program is running in the background? That way, I could tell GameEx to start that program up prior to starting the emulator, and then the screen would have the appearance of scanlines from the overlay. I know this probably far fetched. But it's the only way I think that I could get consistently awesome scanlines on my monitor. Does such a thing exist???

In a word, no.

Most of your emulators either run on opengl or directX.  Those rendering systems are specifically made so that you can't overlay stuff on top of the render window without extreme difficulty.

You can also procure a physical scan line generator.  It's expensive but it may give you the end of the day result without having to monkey with software.

I actually tried that device but it wasn't compatible with my PC/monitor combo. The PC didn't recognize the monitor when the SLG-3000 was inline.
