Hello from Maine,

Well I got a PS3. It was used and running too hot, so I tore it down and replaced the thermal grease, and I run it with no top.

Now it runs nice and cool :) I'd like to mod it so I can play backups, I don't intend to go online with it.

I was going to order Cobra USB mod chip thing, but I don't know if that's the best thing to do and I don't think I'm on the right firmware. I need clues and guidance LOL

It's a CECH-2501A with firmware 4.10, and has a 160 GB HDD

Thanks :)
Craig

p.s. I also found out a small flathead screwdriver can turn #8 Torq security screws :)

You need to be on 3.55 CFW firmware to use either the Cobra or Trueblue dongle.  Cobra and TB are two entirely different mods btw.  TB will allow you to play PS3 games, Cobra will allow PS1 or PS2 games...not sure which.  I believe there is now a hardware solution to downgrade to 3.55 but I don't believe its cheap.  I really haven't kept up with it since I modded to 3.55 way back when it was released.  The PS3 modding scene is pretty dead for the most part and it can be a lot more trouble than its worth.

Thanks or chiming in.

Oh and I got this from another forum :

You need to use a E3 flasher to download your PS3 to V3.55, but i don't recommend it, complicated and not worth doing, i suggest you just wait until there a CFW for it.

And yeah PS3 Cobra is working on the V3.55 PS3, can not work on yours, so..

It's a clue LOL

Yeah . . . modding has been stuck on 3.55 for ages. And lord knows Geohot is out of the scene after his settlement with Sony. I think we may have seen our last PS3 jailbreak. If the scene doesn't move forward soon the PS4 will come out and we can't expect much to happen after that.

heard there is a way to put the ps3 in recovery mode using a modded psp.  then downgrade to 3.55. I will try it after june12 when metal gear online goes...OFFLINE :( :hissy:

since I wont have any reason to care about psn anymore. I will just jailbreak it or whatever.

the only way to downgrade or "mod" a ps3 past 3.7 is hardware you will have to use an E3 Flasher or the like, sorry there is no software solution. I will not give out details here as we like to keep things legal as best we can but just Google it and you'll find plenty of information.

the way the psp service method works is using a specific program on the psp that tell's the ps3 that it's a service jig, it will work on 3.56 and above to go into service mode however when Sony patched the exploit in 3.56 they also made it impossible to exit service mode when using a non-authenticated service jig. In other words you'll be able to get into service mode and downgrade but when you restart the ps3 unless you have a helping hand from the almighty himself it will boot right back into service mode.

I got another clue :)

There is a fella selling downgrade service on eBay. I asked him if 4.10 can be downgraded to 3.55, he said yes, I asked him how he does it, he said "progskeet downgrader".

At this point it's hard to make a case that it would be worth it to pay money for this service. The only utility I can see is for pirating games. If you only want it to play backups (for protecting the originals, or whatever) it makes no sense--jailbreaking forecloses the possibility of playing any game released in like the last year and a half. That includes original discs, i.e., even if you put a retail copy of Portal into your PS3 you can't play it.

I suppose if there are a lot of old games you really want to play without having to pay for them you could jailbreak, play all the old games for free, then update (which would permanently unjailbreak your PS3) and buy the newer games. Maybe I could see the value in that if your PS3 were already at 3.55 or lower so you could do the whole thing yourself. But paying money to ship your PS3 to someone and paying him to downgrade it so you can pirate old games? They're old! Just use that money to buy used copies of the games on Ebay.

Thanks, I didn't realize the newer games won't work on a modded system. I guess Sony is getting sneaky ?

I like the old days when you just soldered in a mod chip and all was well :)

Hopefully mod makers will figure something out :) Like a new mod chip or something.

Yeah, maybe. But that window of opportunity is closing. There's been no success in jailbreaking newer firmwares since 3.55 . . . like a year and a half or something. PS4 is likely out by holiday 2013. Definitely by 2014. Once attention turns to that console PS3 will be all but forgotten.

PS3 scene is dead, and since you're over 3.55 FW you're going to have nothing but headaches.  Sell the unit and buy a used Xbox 360 slim.  Then have SNAAKE rgh it.  My unit works great.

Ya gotta hand it to Sony. The PS3 proved incredibly difficult to hack in the first place. And when it finally was, seriously smart professionals looked at what had been done and declared that it couldn't be undone--that the PS3 was wide open and the security holes could never be plugged. But Sony not only managed to plug those holes, after the fact, but without making any hardware changes they managed to remotely seal the whole thing up even tighter than it was before. They're recovery was seriously impressive.

Losing 70 million of their customer's credit card info . . . not so much.
