Generic Marquees (Australian)
« on: October 01, 2003, 04:53:23 am »
Hi, I'm not sure if y'all can help me with this request, although you have been *incredibly* helpful with all my problems/questions upto here :)
Anyway, I'm looking for a picture of the generic marquees I remember vaguely from my childhood. I live in Australia, so I'm guessing it's an Australian thing? I dunno. They had some sort of colourful pattern covering them, and then a simple white rectangle in the centre with the name of the game on it in plain black text. Pretty boring I know, but I'm in the middle of setting up 3dArcade and I'd love to have these marquees for any game lacking one.
Thanks.  :)

Heh, I'm also an aussie (G'day!) and I know exactly what you're talking about. I never really liked them however, but suit yourself :)

They pop up on ebay every now and then if you're looking for a real one. I did a quick search just then, but I couldn't find any. There was several there a few weeks back however. You may want to try a local arcade parts warehouse... whereabouts in Aus do you live?

Oops, rereading your post I gather you mean that you want a picture of one for the 3D Arcade GUI. From memory they shouldn't be too hard to reproduce, I found a picture of one at highway amusements, (you can also buy this) and they all followed a similar generic pattern.

These are the marquee's you mean right?

Yay.
That's more or less *exactly* what I was looking for.
It's not so much that I 'like' them really, I always thought they looked pretty dodgy, but it's the whole memories thing, I'd always see games with these kinda marquees floating around at like takeaway shops and stuff.  :)
Thanks.

Heheh, I know exactly what you mean. These are the majority of marquee's I see everywhere, and it's great for nostalgic value. ;)

There's a nice little auction here on Ebay for 140 generic marquees made out of mylar. I'm sure they'll go pretty cheap, so I thought I might check if anyone else was keen in getting at least one!  :)

What exactly is 'Challenger Player's Choice' though?
I'm not too sure exactly what he's selling...
Edit: And on that note, what exactly is Mylar?

3D Arcade will make marquees on-the-fly using the screenshot. It resizes the snap to the marquee and overlays the game name on top of it.
You can also copy crop the marquee off of cabinet pics like at KLOV or recrop a title shot of the game. 3D Arcade will resize it automatically.

Who knows, but that could turn out to be a better deal than the 8 "EA Sports PGA Tournament Golf" marquees I got for $1 on ebay.

Mylar is kind of like a plastic paper...
It's a little thicker than paper...
Translucent (light doesn't shine through it but would illuminate it kind of... like paper!...)
it's a flexible plastic sheet of "paper".

If I were going to get a marquee printed, I'd print it on this stuff... (It's also used for some blue prints & templates... That's how I know about it...)

But from the sounds of the auction... It's 140 of the same freeking marquee... Like they were printed u pfor some one & then they deceided not to buy/use them... bleh!

There is a game called "Challenger" but I doubt these are for it... It's a very old game.
Just a waiste of good mylar if you ask me.
I'm not a freak!...
Oh wait...
Yes I am...

I think Mylar is also what those overhead transparency sheets are made of if that helps clarify what they will be like. If you needed it thicker you'll have 140 of them so you could always stack a few of them together. ;D

As for those specific marquees, I'm pretty sure I've seen them on generic cabs in a few arcades in Australia during my mis-spent youth. So they have have been taken out of cabs from an arcade that closed down? The easiest way to find out would be to email the seller (Hi, my name is Dave and my special subject will be "the bleeding obvious").
