wood and fog... ? can I get away with work today?
« on: May 03, 2012, 09:08:57 am »
So it's my day off, and I'd like to do some work outside on the cabinet, but the weather is really borderline crappy. Foggy and cold (51 degrees), 40% chance of rain on occasion throughout the day, 89% humidity.

I'm working with 3/4" birch plywood, and my sawboard is made of mdf.  I know mdf is going to be a problem if it gets wet directly, but what about this humidity?  And what about the plywood?  Am I risking warpage of the wood by working it in this kind of weather?

I mean, as nice as it might be to catch up on the Marvel movies I missed in preparation for The Avengers... I'd really rather get something done on this cab! Need some input from woodwrights!

I wouldn't be worried about it.  Only the outer layer of of the ply would be affected, if at all in that short period of time.  If the weather was like that continuously and the wood was exposed to it, then there would be a problem.

Yak's got ya covered.  One day outside in those conditions isn't a problem.  Just make sure to get the wood back to a humidity controlled environment after you're done.

Thanks fellas.   I waited until noon to see what the weather wanted to do.  There hadn't been any change better or worse (maybe it warmed up a tiny bit?) ... so I got out there!

Happy to say I got all of the work done I planned on doing! I'm done with the circ saw cuts, now I've got to start marking up and detail cutting the pieces. Update in the project thread will come tomorrow I think...
