what kind of sanding paper?
« on: April 22, 2012, 10:59:23 pm »
Im wanting to smooth out and take the paint off an existing Devastators cabinet. I got 120 G but its barely doing anything. Is 60g better for this?

You can try paint stripper or a heat gun and a wide putty knife. I have used, and prefer those methods to sandpaper for removing paint.

Stripper is better, get most of the paint off then smooth it out with your 120.  Experiment, go to a more coarse grit if you need to then sand back up to 120 before painting/vinyl.  Sandpaper is relatively cheap but you get what you pay for.  Sandpaper varies in quality.  Garnet sandpaper (red color) is not as good as aluminum oxide open coat paper (brown, shiny).

Sorry, havent' stripped anythign in awhile.  I know a lot of people have used citrus based.  just see what they have in the paint section and be careful- ventilation, etc.  for paint, there are a lot of variables.  Brushing/rolling or spraying?

I used 3m safest stripper. It was a bit more spendy, but no ventilation worries. It is a milder stripper, and I was stripping paint to preserve the vinyl artwork beneath, but I felt it was good enough to use on a cabinet even without artwork below. I just brushed it on, waited 5 minutes, and scraped it off with a wide putty knife.
