Best mame based light guns anyone?
« on: April 16, 2012, 02:44:36 pm »
Hi guys, I'm wondering if anyone can help.
I'm really thinking of doing another build.
A dedicated machine to either t2 or house of the dead.

What will be the best light guns to use for mame?
Long time ago there was a t2 cabinet on gumtree but i never thought of buying it :(

And i really want a shooter cab.

Thanx in advance

T2 isn't a light gun game, it's a positional gun game.

HOTD is a light gun game.

Right now I'd personally say the Aimtrak from Ultimarc, although personally I've only tried a few.  Old style lightguns don't work unless you have a crt monitor, the ones like the aimtrak use an IR light bar and a camera/sensor in the gun like a Wii remote.  I had another gun (LCD Topgun I think) and it was just buggy and a pain to mess with.

There are a couple of things about the Aimtrak...  I don't keep it plugged in all the time, and when I do use it Windows sometimes sees it as a different device.  So when I go into MAME I frequently have to remap the controls, where it will sometimes see it as Gun 2 but other times Gun 3 or Gun 4.  (Never had it call it Gun 1, my guess is it's seeing the trackball or spinner as the first "gun").  It's quick to remap the controls but a bit of a pain, but I kind of suspect that if I left the gun plugged in all the time it wouldn't do that.

It also seems like the calibration drifts a bit (maybe due to switching resolutions of the games) so I fequently recalibrate it between games, but it's a very painless process with the Aimtrak.

Chiller (My wife loves Chiller. She is obviously insane)
Crossbow
Cheyenne (not very good, though)
Combat
Bang!
Lethal Enforcers
Lethal Enforcers II
Operation Wolf
Operation Wolf 3
Egg Venture
Point Blank
Police Trainer
Area 51 (if your PC can handle it)
Carnevil (if your PC can handle it)

House of the Dead 1-3 are available for Windows as well, though they are limited to 1 lightgun.  I think HOTD2 is playable though another emulator (I think Sega Model 2) with 2 players, though I haven't tried it out. I don't think its playable with 2 AimTraks using NullDC.  You could also put a Dreamcast in the cab and play HOTD2 with two players using the Dreamcast guns.  Jurassic Park also works with the Sega Model 3 emulator with 2 players, from what I understand, but I haven't tried it yet.

I have an EMS (LCD) TopGun*pistol, and it is working pretty good for me.
As explained previously by others, they do use the same concept as the Ultimarc Aimtrack, i.e. a sensor in the gun and some active IR LED’s in the cabinet. And it then emulates a pointing device (mouse) in windows.
Haven’t tried the Aimtrack yet, but as with TopGun you can use it for any kind of screen, not just CRT.
It is pretty awesome to play games with the enemies in full size on a wall (projector/beamer) by the way =)

Maybe it is feasible to use a positional gun through an A-pac interface (or similar) in MAME, but I haven’t tried that yet. Shouldn’t be that hard since it is basically just two (y & x) axle potentiometers. In other words, just an UZI shaped analog joystick =)

Actually I haven't personally tried it but I thought they made some changes in MAME several releases back to "fix" some things with lightgun support and I thought they had tweaked the "positional gun" games to work with a lightgun (or a trackball/mouse).  If I remember I'll try to test it out tonight.

Using a Wii remote is a great way to give yourself headaches.  We've all tried it.  Nobody has ever fully cracked that nut.

Everyone seems to like Aim Tracks but they're expensive and I'm not sold on that recoil.  You're also tethered to the cabinet.

I've got a Top Gun 3 and stuck a wide angle lens on it.  Works fine for my purposes and I can lay on the couch and use it.
