Fighter Cabinet - PS3 or X360?
« on: March 29, 2012, 04:45:53 pm »
I have a long history with Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat games from back in my college days so I have been planning to build a new cabinet primarily focused on SSFIV AE and MK9.  Since I want MK9 it has to be console powered.  I currently have a 3.55 cfw PS3.  I don't have an Xbox right now.  Most of the projects I have seen it seems like most prefer to go with an Xbox over the PS3.  What are going to be the downsides of me using a PS3?  I haven't tried Mame on the PS3 yet either so I don't know what my options are there either.

Basically i'm just looking for some pros/cons to building a console based cab and which console is better overall for the task.  I would love the cab to be able to run MK1,2,3 SFIICE, Turbo, etc along with the newer games so Mame capabilities would be nice.

rgh xbox 360..from me

actually if you already have a jailbroken ps3 then stick to that. only games you'd be missing out on are xbox 360 exclusive shmups. there is mame and finalburn for ps3 and all other next gen fighting games.

Well one downside is that with a 3.55 cwf console, I can't play any of the newer stuff as it requires a newer firmware.  I guess I could buy a TB dongle so I can upgrade if I find i'm missing out on something.  My understanding (might be wrong) is that a Jtagged Xbox has no restrictions?  I also see a lot of stuff out there about controller hacks for the Xbox, not as much for the PS3.

Just get a legit 360, download the games off of Xbox live for the 5 bucks or so they cost and then play people online through your cab

controller hacks for the Xbox, not as much for the PS3.

You rang?   :D

For the PS3, there are tons of options that don't require hacking a controller.  You can get the toodles axisdapter, as one example.  Dual Strike is another.

The boot times are retarded

mine boots up within 5 seconds. SOME xboxes are random and may take up to like 30 sec. most just work.

as for pads, you can just get a pair of these.
http://www.focusattack.com/paewang/ there is minor soldering involved or you can buy the quick disconnect thing http://www.focusattack.com/16pc-wire-with-110-quick-disconnect/

I will have to read up on RGH/Jtag for xbox.  I don't have one so never looked into them.  Can I go out and purchase a new Xbox today and RGH it or do I need to find an older FW version?

Sorry bro, your hacks are awesome, lord knows how many I got off you...5, 6?  I lost count.  But I pre-ordered a couple PS360+'s.  >:D
Needed the clean dual mod solution.
The paewang requires you to solder connections, which is fine for me, but I'm f'ing lazy. :)

:laugh2:

What ever console you do decide to go with definitely get with HaRuMaN. Even if its just for parts. I got a dual strike for my ps3 hitbox from him. Had it within a couple of days.

Ive been rocking MK9 on xbox 360 in my cab for a little while. I have a PHAT LT (Samsung) and somehow am not banned. I still play on live. Still waiting for the Ban Hammer though. Im sure any day it will happen.

I don't have any problem paying for my games.  If it was just about SSFIV and MK9 then I would just use an unmodded console and play them online.  The problem is that I wanted to also use it as a mame machine and I can't do that on the console without modding it.  Is there any good way to switch between X360/PS3 and a PC?  I would be fine to run mame off a PC and the newer HD Fighters off the console.  It all comes down to how easily I can switch between them.

Cool, thanks for all the info guys.  Guess I have some decisions to make.  Should probably make a list and decide exactly what I want out of the console portion of the cab.  Then I can decide between the Modded PS3 for free or buying an Xbox.

yea im late to the party but here is what i would do. stick with the ps3 as the console side as you already have it. and toss in a low cost micro $50 pc to run the mame portion. Seeing as your only gonna be running the old MK and SF games on mame it shouldnt need to be a power house. then you dont have to worry bout the cfw. and like donkbaca said just get a kvm switch. and you can dual wire the control panel to do both pc and ps3. or if you get the toodles ps3 board you can use it for both ps3 and pc. to me this seems to be the most cost effective and easiest solution and is what i would do in a hybrid build.

What are these $50 micro Pcs you speak of? ;)  I was going to ask how much computing power I actually need to run mame.  The mame portion was actually going to support a full stable of games.  The only extra PC I have lying around right now is an Intel 9550 Quad core and i'm sure I don't need that for mame.

To switch from PC to 360 I use these switches. One is for the controls and the other is for the monitor.

I picked up a cheap dell for 40 bucks in our classifieds and it runs all the MK's and SF. its rocking a Pentium 4.

i have a hp slim i just put in my mame cab last night. it has a dual core amd athlon II 3600+ not much cpu but it runs all the games i play. with that core 2 duo you got you should have no problem running anything you want. there was a thread bout some 35 dollar pc but for round 50 bucks you can buy or build a cheap mame pc. check into the amd apu they have a gfx chip in with the cpu. think they got one board for under 50. hey i got a P4 sitting in the room that was gonna be my mame pc but then i ended up with a dual core and fig the extra power couldnt hurt.

If you  look in my sig, you will see my build thread, which I need to get around to finalizing.

Anyhow, I have a 3 ghz core 2 duo running in my rig, runs everything that is playable that I want to play.
I switch between the xbox and the PC using a KVM switch that I attached to a green seimitsu button.  Here is what it looks like:

You press the button and it switches the controls, sound and monitor to the xbox 360

If you have any questions, let me know
