That series was such a let down, started out so good, but went south 1/3 of the way into it

Yeap.  The fame/hype/pressure got to the author.  It's clear to see when an author knows their entire story before writing it and when an author only knows the how to start it.  Take Matrix for example.  The first was dynamite, the next two were lackluster.  The reason being they made the first movie as a stand alone and it worked so well.

Yeah, the most interesting thing was the Word, and like 1/3 of the way through the series he just stops using it.
