Coctail replica build
« on: March 26, 2012, 03:45:34 am »
I had this idea for years, and the PCB and buttons etc. on the shelf for a while.
And finally I have started the actual wood working, so maybe one day there might be a playable cabinet =)

Guess most of you can name the game by this rough outline of the cabinet shape.

I knew it was track and field just by the slope of the CPO area....

Great, I knew that this typical profile should be recognized here. It is a Hyper Olympic pcb, and I will probably add some “artistic freedom” in my replica build. I.e. not have a 100% copy of the artwork etc. However I will try to have it as authentic as possible, since I believe the design of the cabinet is epic.
My biggest concern right now is to find any “wood” laminate to use for the sides. Suppose there is vinyl that could be used that looks authentic, but I don’t know if it can be done without visible seems. I will probably by some from vinyldepot.com and try.

Some progress made this weekend.

* adding the base/bottom section
* made a coin door opening
* t-mold cut on all sides

Yes, I do know that the coin door is another model, but that is what I have and I will not spend time and money chasing down the original.
There will probably be more “artistic freedom” during this project later on.

Still haven’t decided if I should do the control panels in wood or metal. Wood I know how to do, but I have no skills or proper tools to bend metal in a correct shape.

Also looking for a donor TV but I’m a bit uncertain of the original size. Does anyone have any hard facts regarding that?

Got the t-molds yesterday (great service from t-molding.com as always) and also a 15$ donor TV from a local flea market.
Good thing is that I almost immediately found the service menu code, so I'm positive that there will be a perfect picture eventually :)

Thanks.
It's actually one of those games that you can actually gather up to 4 people to play, since it is always a great party game.
Have never played or seen the coctail version in real life though, but whenever I start Track&Field at the MAME cabinet everybody wants to join :)

Exactly, I did go cheap on this detail. A total ammount of 30USD for the vinyl is pricy, compared to the 200USD offer I got for real laminate.
You could hardly tell the difference if you aren't up close. But in a dark mancave and with a beer or two, nobody will ever notice or even  care :)

Slow progress, but finally I had someone to make the metal work for the control panels.
Maybe it will be completed some day, but with a 3 days old daughter it will probably be slow for a while more.

Since I don't have any good scans of the CPO I decided to make my own. So far I have trying to be as close to the original as possible, but I haven't decided what to do with the running man yet.

Here's the current progress (made in an old version of Corel Draw by the way):

Some more progress...
I have to finish the artwork some day and have it printed properly (not like the mockup, with standard laser prints), and make the holes in the second panel.

Thanks CW!
Seems to me that you would need a new CPO as well  :P

Is it possible to get another picture of the running man that is sharper? This one seems a little blurry...

Get that power supply unhooked ASAP!!! Nothing slows a project down to a screeching halt like being "operational".

Nice build really looks great.

Yeah, I should know better than that  :P
It is always the same, and it started 20 years ago when I was building an advanced sound setup in my car. When 75% in the project, I connected everything to verify how it sounds, and then it was never really finished with wires hanging loose everywhere
Thanks for your comments.

By the way, does anybody know if the mains input goes at any of the sides or the bottom of the original cabinet?
