Robotron Mini-cab Fullsized

   I liked the sideart graphics and  the general shape of the old Robotron mini, but wanted a full size cab for playability, so I combined the two. The buttons and sticks are leaf (except for the 4-way).
    Everything is put together with lag bolts, so i can take it apart and put it back together in about 30 mins.

Very nice!!  The Robo-mini is my favorite mini cab, by far.  Very clean and characteristic, and it just screams "retro".

Did you paint the sideart on?  Is that a metal or wood cp?  Good job on the cabinet, it looks great!

If you would just do something about the fact that you can see the white front of the PC monitor, then your cabinet would easily be the best looking scratchbuilt cabinet I have ever seen.

Try coloring the white plastic on the front of the monitor with a sharpie.

THAT, and you really need a coin door, it looks wrong without one.

I agree with Paige, hide that monitor with a bezel of some kind and chuck a coin door in and youve got one tasty cab dude.

Very nice and clean! I love the retro look - the graphics turned out very sharp.

My 2 cents on the monitor - you can also use a wide black tape, which might give you a more consistent finish than the sharpie. Overall, looks great!

Simply mask your crt and spray paint black.  Works great.  Very very nice looking cab.  I'd like to see a good pic of your control panel.

 Thanks for the compliments and advice. Yeah, I agree I need to do something to hide the case better. Its actually a 27" tv in there and I'm still debating on getting a WG monitor, so I'll probably use black tape as a temporary fix.

 The cp is similar to the multi-williams set up with a spinner thrown in the front and a 4-way on one side.
  I'm not really happy with my cp graphics, so i need to work on that too.

  I was going to skip the coin door, but I'll take your advice and grab one.

You painted over birch plywood?  Why?  I would have used a cheaper 1 side finished ply for this instead of furniture grade (staining, not painting) wood.

I hope you mean a Williams style, and not one of those god-awful over/under doors.  Wouldn't look right on a Williams style cabinet.  I can make one of these my next project, if you're interested.

I've never played a real Robotron machine but have played Robotron on my mame machine.  On my machine you don't fire until you move the right joystick (player 2 joystick).  Is this how the original game worked?  On mine it seems to fire continuously after you first touch the right hand joystick.  Sound correct and true to the original?

The right joystick acted like 8 fire buttons, if you will...
When you held it down in one of the 8 directions your player would continuously fire in that direction... The left stick controlled his movement.

That way you could walk in any direction & shoot in any direction at the same time.

 I used Birch because I needed something with a smooth face that I could sand and not worry about the grain showing through. I think it was A-1, one side A grade the other #1, the only kind they had in 3/4". The southern pine and fir plywood was too grainy.

 Peale if you have a WMS coin door I would be interested, even if its in rough shape (no major dents).

There are primers for such an application.

All doors are refinished.  I was selling them after doing just repairs, but now I've been giving them the full monty: strip and repaint, any needed repairs.

That thing is awesome!
I started putting plans together earlier this year to build myself a cabaret based on the robotron mini.
I abandoned the project for others, but your's definitely looks a lot better than I imagine mine would have.

Absolutely Beautiful!!!!   fantastic work.   The Robo is my all time fav game, and the cab shape itself in my top 5.
