Which version of mame plays nice with everything else?
« on: March 12, 2012, 06:40:23 pm »
Seems there are a ton of mame flavors, I am using mame+ as xarcade recommends it and it seems xarcade joystick works right off the bat, but some games are not good.

Can anyone tell me which mame version gives me the best chance of playing nice with maximus arcade and xarcade 2 plyr joystick, I want SIMPLE. Once I am setup with my 50 or so arcade classics, my project will be done.

Just setup the controls within mame using tab... it will create its own INI file and all ur games should be good to go.

The default call to call up the settings menu while MAME is running is the keyboard's TAB key.  Whatever it is mapped to (if changed) should be pressed.  Conversely, you can hook up a keyboard temporarily and change your settings quite easily, which will be saved in INI files for each particular game.

There is a xarcade controller file included with standard mame.  Set the ctrlr entry in your mame.ini to xarcade and you should be good to go regardless of the mame version you choose (I suggest plain old mame... it's just easier).

If the xarcade you are using doesn't work well with that ctrlr file, simply post the xarcade model you have and ask around.  Those things are fairly popular, I can pretty much guarantee you that the work has already been done for you.

As per usual the solution to a controll mapping issue is to use ctrlr files.  I think I need to make a macro or something for future questions.  ;)

Agree with Howard on plain old mame.  Works great.
