advmame help needed

Setup:
trident t-64 card
15khz monitor
win98 se with newest advmame

the problem:

when i run advcfg for the first time I am able to setup everything with no warnings etc. then after i save and try to run advv it says "no text mode available for this hardware"  then if i check advcfg again i get the same message??  I'm stumped as to what setting it need to be able to run advcfg then advv like everyone else seems to be able to.
