If I were getting a TV today I'd get one with 3D. I could hardly care less about the feature, but I have the impression that the price premium at this point is pretty negligible. And I'd at least use the feature every now and then.
Here's what I think is amazingly awesome about 3D TVs, but I think it might only work on specific Sony models. In conjunction with a PS3 you can play multiplayer games against an opponent sitting right next to you on the couch, but instead of having split-screen, each of you have your own full-sized screen. And you can't see the other person's screen. Even though you are both physically looking at exactly the same television on the wall. So, instead of using the shutter glasses to show each eye a different alternating frame, the shutter glasses show both your eyes one frame, then they show both your opponent's eyes another frame, then both your eyes one frame and so on.
So, even though you only have one TV, instead of playing split-screen you effectively have two full-size TV's networked together in a LAN party, and even though you're sitting right next to your opponent it's impossible for him to cheat by looking at your screen, like to see where you are. It's one of those strange situations where some afterthought alternative use for some technology is a million times cooler and more compelling than the primary purpose for which it was created.
Unfortunately, like I said, it's a Sony PS3 thing, so I think it might only work with a Sony TV (even though I'm pretty sure that any 3D television using shutter glasses is technologically capable of the same feat).
