What does a cap kit actually fix?
« on: September 24, 2003, 03:54:44 pm »
I have an old monitor with slight burn in (not bad at all)... And it needs to be degaused badly (top left)... but other then that... its pretty good...  Just old

I keep hearing that people get their monitors looking like new with a cap kit..

but what does that actually fix?

How hard is it to do?

And can you get a cap for just about any monitor?

I've heard they cure the common cold ;D  but seriously, it's more for color and alignment issues (not screen burn or "gaussed" monitors.  If you're colors are solid (not washed out or weak) and the picture is where its supposed to be, then you are likely fine, you might not even notice the difference.  I just did a cap kit and after you get up the nerve to discharge the tube ,its really a piece of cake.  Hell even the discharging wasn't that bad--it's like any dangerous task, if you pay attention and aren't a dumbass , you'll be fine.

If you know the chassis manufacturer than getting a cap kit is pretty easy--www.therealbobroberts.com seems to be the defacto expert on these things and an excellent guy to deal with at the same time.  Hope that helps.
its better to not post and be thought a fool, then to whip out your keyboard and remove all doubt...

I did a cap kit change as well, and the thing that I noticed is it took away color veriations.  Hard to explain, but it almost looked like monkey bars on the screen.

Now it's gone!
