Speaking of Comics: does anyone remember Supreme? (Image Comics)
« on: February 17, 2012, 11:26:34 pm »
I might have an issue of this, but I think I just looked at few. And Supreme was so outrageously bad-ass, that it was almost as ridiculous as Dragon Ball Z (still some years to come).....while also having a slight enticement amidst the brutality. Maybe it was 1994, but I still thought it was pretty heavy for comics. (Not the heaviest, dear no, but that title is not safe for R-rated theatres.)

"His history varied from story to story; at one point, he was an extremely religious angel of vengeance, who cited Scripture to justify his actions. At other times, Supreme considered himself to be a god, especially after defeating the Norse god Thor and taking his mystical hammer, Mjolnir."

DAMN. He stomped Thor.

Although considered to be the most powerful being in the Liefeld universe, he had his share of defeats, including being killed in the cross-title Deathmate Black series (published by both Image and Valiant Comics), losing his powers in Extreme Prejudice, and being brutally killed by Crypt in Extreme Sacrifice."

And then we get this pretty heavy, a tangled montage of an, origin story:

As the story unfolds, we learn that, in 1937, Ethan Crane shot and killed two men in retaliation for the...... Crane was subsequently shot by two police officers, but he survived and was sentenced to life in prison. In prison, the government offered him a chance to participate in an experiment to enhance humans, hoping that, unlike the six previous guinea pigs, he would survive. Unfortunately, Crane perished like the others; but unlike the others, he came back to life. The outside world was strange and new to him. Making his way to a church, Crane found sanctuary given by Father Beam, and soon discovered some of his new abilities.

Unfortunately, Crane perished like the others; but unlike the others, he came back to life. <<

So, here he was not a super Alien. At least yet.

I remember Supreme.  He was one of the few Image characters that I really liked.  I mainly bought the other's for the artwork.

Still have a few issues of Supreme although I'm not sure exactly how many.  I remember really liking the concept of Supreme returning to earth after years in space.  I don't recall those other back-stories you cited though.  That's interesting.

My favorite from that era was Bloodshot from Valiant comics.

As a general rule, everything Liefeld created post X-force was garbage

yeah, they were the poster of the comic book bubble in the late 90's.  They did have some good writing and interesting characters though.

I did buy a bunch of Image (Spawn comes to mind) comics for the "investment".  They are not worth squat and I don't ever want to reread them.  I keep them as a reminder not to speculate again.

I at least might reread my Valiant comics.  Eternal Warrior and Rai were awesome as well.

yeah, the image/valiant crossover thing seemed like a match made in heaven - you had valiant which had good writers and bad art with image which had awesome art but bad writing.  Unfortunately the crossover sucked.

I think Spawn is very readable, in fact, it might be the only one of the original Image comics that is readable

From what I recall the Batman/Spawn crossover was pretty good. It's been a long time though.

Most Batman things I enjoy, I find them fairly well written. Daredevil too

Yeah, Image Art was very cool. I got into comics during MacFarlane's black suit Spidey. It just totally made sense to me, despite having no awareness of The Secret Wars ( I or II ). I thought Wildcats was a big Image title, no?

I think I remember the story versus art thing with Valiant. I wasn't really buying comics, though. Reading books much more.

Image had some good stuff, like early Spawn, WildC.A.T.S, I liked Gen 13 for a bit and Wetworks (when it finally came out) was good.

Valiant prices did go crazy, I liked Bloodshot and Solar myself.

Lot of companies went under from that time, Image still going very very strong.

THe problem with Image was that they were always late.  You would get one issue every 3 months or so.

Valiant had great stories.  I thought X-O manowar was good, and so was Harbinger

I read X-O for a bit, was pretty good, I never got into Harbringer.  X-O (and much of Valiant) is coming back, FYI: http://ifanboy.com/articles/valiant-announces-x-o-manowar-with-venditti-nord/

Deathblow.  I loved Deathblow from Image.  Offshoot of Team 7, Tim Sale art, awesome.
